Best Hiking Trails in Cascade River State Park for Families

A woman hikes along the rocks at Cascade River State Park.

There are 18 miles of trails within the park. Most of the trails in Cascade River State Park are rated as easy to moderate. Here are 2 of my top picks for the best trails in Cascade River State Park for families:

  • Cascade River Lower Loop – easy, .5 mile loop
  • Lookout Mountain Loop – moderate, 3.2-mile loop trail
  • Cascade River State Park Lake Trail – moderate, 3.3-mile loop trail
  • The Superior Hiking Trail also runs through the park-the Cascade River Superior Hiking Trail Loop is a steep, moderate 7.8-mile loop trail.

Seasonal Things to Do in Cascade River State Park

Frozen falls.

There are plenty of fun seasonal things to do in Cascade River State Park with your kids. Here are a few good ones to know about while you plan your visit!

In warmer months, families can enjoy hiking, fishing, and camping. The park offers 18 miles of hiking trails, many of which run along the river. There is plenty of space to roam and take in the beauty of the North Shore. Hikes range in length and difficulty, making this one of the best state parks in Minnesota for families with young kids (or, kids new to hiking).

In winter, the enclosed picnic shelter becomes a cozy warming house (on weekends and holidays-watch the hours closely). Then, Cascade River State Park features 17 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails (including a beginner loop). It's a great place to introduce kids to skiing. Snowshoeing is also a favorite winter activity here, with the freedom to explore almost anywhere in the park.

Of course, spring means waterfall season, so you can see the waters absolutely roar with the recent snow melt!

There's genuinely no bad time to visit Cascade River State Park with kids. Each season brings something new and fun to explore!

Tips for Visiting Cascade River State Park with Kids

Here are a few tips for visiting Cascade River State Park with kids:

  • I recommend wearing waterproof shoes, as puddles collect easily among the rocks
  • Hiking shoes with good ankle support are also a must here
  • I highly recommend wearing ice cleats in the winter
  • Be prepared for some stairs (hiking poles may be helpful for some hikers)
  • This hike is not stroller-friendly (even for trail strollers)
  • If you only want to see the waterfalls, it's a quick ~10-minute hike from the waterfall (easy incline with tiny trekkers for a quick photo op with the waterfall)
  • Swimming is not recommended here

Family Itinerary for Cascade River State Park

Let's plan your family visit to Cascade River State Park. I've included two itinerary ideas. One for a short visit and one for a longer visit.

If You Only Have 1 Hour

If you only have an hour at Cascade River State Park, take the half-mile hike on the Cascade River Lower Loop. This is the best place to see the cascades (in any season). There is a bridge where you can take a lovely family photo, too! Then, walk across HWY 61 to see where the Cascade River joins Lake Superior. Afterward, grab lunch at Cascade Restaurant & Pub (just minutes down the road).

If You Have More Time

If you have more time, hike the Lookout Mountain Loop. It's a moderate, 3.2-mile loop trail. You'll walk past several cascades, and you'll get to enjoy great views from Lookout Mountain! You'll even see Lake Superior and the Sawtooth Mountains. Expect 600 feet in elevation gain. Be sure to pack enough water and snacks for the journey! I recommend packing a backpack with a picnic to enjoy along the way.
