Cozumel, Mexico, is a Caribbean gem just off the Yucatan Peninsula (just across the waters from Playa del Carmen). The island is known for its crystal-clear waters, incredible snorkeling, and laid-back island vibes. While the bustling port area is a hub for cruise ships, venture beyond, and you’ll discover an island brimming with family-friendly charm. We loved our recent spring break vacation in Cozumel with kids, and I can’t wait to show you why!

Traveling to Cozumel with our young daughter, we were welcomed by friendly locals, enjoyed mouthwatering food, and explored endless kid-friendly things to do on the island. From the best beaches to unforgettable excursions, this 5-day itinerary for Cozumel with kids covers everything you need to know about exploring the island together. Tips + Packing List for Cozumel with Kids

Before we dive into this Cozumel itinerary with kids, there are a few things to know to help make your trip planning more successful. From packing tips and tips for getting around the island with kids, keep reading to learn more about how to prepare for your upcoming family trip to Cozumel.

Is Cozumel, Mexico, Safe with Kids?

You may be wondering: is Cozumel safe for kids? Based on our own experiences after traveling to the island twice, yes, we do think it is a safe place to travel with children. With that said, everyone has their own comfort levels and expectations when traveling. You need to make the decision that’s right for your family.

The island’s warm, welcoming locals are eager to assist. And many speak English, which adds to its convenience. Plus, as a hub for cruise ships, Cozumel thrives on tourism and is well-equipped to cater to visitors’ needs. 

You’ll find taxis, car rental agencies, hotels, and tourist information booths in the main port area. These resources can help you book private tours, arrange for drivers or guides, or provide any other assistance you may need. Whether you’re exploring the island’s attractions or strolling through its charming streets, Cozumel’s friendly atmosphere and robust tourist infrastructure make it easy to navigate and enjoy with kids.

How to Get Around Cozumel with Kids

Will you need a car to experience all the best things to do in Cozumel with kids? Not necessarily. The main part of the island, around San Miguel de Cozumel, is very walkable. If you stay on this part of the island, you can experience almost everything on this itinerary without a car. Though, you may opt to take a taxi or two for convenience and ease. 

Taxis are easy to hail from most streets. Look for one with the ‘available’ light turned on and raise your hand to indicate your need. If you’re worried about the cost, ask about the rate before entering. Expect to use cash for taxis.

To/From the Airport

There are several ‘approved’ taxi vendors available from the airport. Once you have your baggage, simply walk out of the customs area, through the vendor area, and into the taxi station. You can select a private or shared taxi. We opted for a private taxi, which cost about $45 for three people. You can pay with a credit card here. 

Though the vendor area? What does that mean? There is a hallway between exiting customs and arriving at the taxi station. These are island vendors hoping for you to book hotels, excursions, etc. through them. They can be very pushy. You do not need to stop in this hallway or talk to anyone. Just keep walking ahead, and you will exit the taxi area. If you get caught up in a conversation (like we did), politely, but firmly, decline everything and make your way to the taxi area.

A Few Tips

Here are a few more tips for traveling to Cozumel with kids.

• Beaches: While beaches in Cozumel are technically free to use, the vast majority are only accessible through beach clubs, which charge a fee for facilities or expect you to order food/drinks. To get to a “wild beach”, you will need a car and to do your research.
• Renting a Car: Be prepared for a manual jeep or scooter. Some safety measures and amenities, such as working seatbelts, air conditioning, airbags, etc., may not be available if you rent on-site. To ensure American standards are available, reserve a car ahead of time from a reputable company and rent it from the airport (not the tourist strip in the port area).
• Cash: Have at least some local currency on hand in cash. Many taxis, restaurants, and small vendors only accept cash.
• Spanish is the primary language in Mexico. Learning a few phrases (think greetings, ordering food, etc.) is helpful. Many servers, taxi drivers, and vendors speak some English, but not all. When in doubt, have a translator app ready to use.
• In Cozumel, it is very common not to flush toilet paper. When visiting, follow signs requesting that you throw it away (instead of flushing it).
• The phone signal can be spotty if you plan to drive around the island. We recommend that you use downloaded maps.

Packing List Reminders for Cozumel with Kids

In addition to what you usually pack for traveling with kids, here’s a quick packing list for your family trip to Cozumel:

• No special adaptors or converters for electronics are needed for Cozumel.
• We recommend packing multiple swimsuits for each person. They can take a while to dry in the humidity, and you will likely need at least one each day.
• The sun is HOT and powerful here. Pack proper sunscreen and reapply multiple times daily (especially if you are Midwesterners like us!). Hats, sunglasses, and chapstick are also good ideas.
• Like many Caribbean islands, Puerto Rico experiences frequent afternoon rain showers. Pack an umbrella or rain ponchos.
• Waterproof shoes. I recommend these shoes from Vessi; they offer adult and kid sizes. They are helpful for staying dry while exploring during rainy weather.
• Do not pack beach toys – you can find them once you arrive. In fact, your hotel or home rental probably already has them.
• Bring water bottles – again, the sun is hot! Make sure you have what you need to stay hydrated.

Day 1 on this itinerary for Cozumel with kids is a low-key afternoon/evening focused on arriving, getting settled, having some pool time at your accommodations, and enjoying a few tacos for dinner.

Where to Stay in Cozumel with Kids: Casa Mandarina Cozumel

Wondering where to stay in Cozumel with kids? We loved Casa Mandarina Cozumel! The apartment-style stay offers comfort, convenience (it’s within walking distance of the main port area), and tropical charm. In my opinion, it is an ideal choice for families. 

We stayed in a spacious one-bedroom, one-bath apartment with a pull-out couch for our daughter. The apartment also had a fully equipped kitchen and thoughtful amenities like cleaning services (with one complimentary weekly cleaning). Additionally, each unit is designed with comfort in mind, offering WiFi, Netflix-ready TVs, air conditioning, ceiling fans, and more. The friendly staff and prime location seal the deal—we’d absolutely stay here again!

Finally, the common outdoor areas are outstanding, featuring a stunning pool surrounded by vibrant flowers and curious little lizards! The common area also includes lounge chairs, tables, a shower, and even a dive rinse tank for snorkeling or diving enthusiasts. It’s a great spot for afternoon swims and drinks by the pool.

Alternatively, if you are traveling with a large group, we have also stayed in this spacious multi-bedroom house. It includes a top-notch location, an outdoor pool, and a daily cleaning service.

Las Tortugas Restaurant is your first dining stop on this itinerary for Cozumel with kids. This family-friendly spot combines authentic flavors with a relaxed, welcoming vibe. We loved the octopus ceviche, flavorful tacos, and classic chips and guac. Meanwhile, our daughter enjoyed a meal from the dedicated kids’ menu. 

The best part? The on-site playground is perfectly sized for young kids and fenced with a gated entrance right near the seating area, making it easy to relax while keeping an eye on the little ones. 

The attentive, cheerful staff made the experience even better. Whether you’re looking for chicken fajitas or fresh seafood, Las Tortugas deserves a spot among the best restaurants in Cozumel with kids.

Day 2 in Cozumel with Kids: Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park

Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park is a must-visit for any Cozumel itinerary with kids (though it will likely be your most touristy day on the island). Located within Cozumel’s National Reef Marine Park, it combines natural beauty, kid-friendly fun, and world-class snorkeling. In fact, it’s one of the best beaches in Cozumel with kids. You can make this day as relaxing or as packed with activities as you desire. We usually go low-key, but if you want to experience it in Cozumel, it’s available here!

The park offers everything you need for an unforgettable day: a stunning beach, a calm inlet for swimming, snorkeling gear rentals, and amenities like bathrooms, showers, and hammocks. Kids will love the water playground, sandy playground, shows, and pre-Hispanic replicas scattered throughout the park. The underwater statues and vibrant marine life make snorkeling a highlight for all ages! Trust me, you will see an unbelievable amount of fish while snorkeling here. There are even tequila tastings and spa experiences for adults.

Then, families can also spend the day relaxing in private umbrellas (included with your entrance, first come/first serve) or exploring the tropical gardens near the beach. While relaxing in the waterfront loungers, food and drink service will come by periodically and check on you. You can order right from your chair! In addition to cabana service, several restaurants and food kiosks are also on-site. With so much to offer, it is no wonder this is one of the best things to do on the island for families!

Dinner at La Clásica Cozumel & Ice Cream at Flamingo Ice Cream Bar

Dinner at La Clásica Cozumel was a highlight of our trip! And, it was, hands down, one of the best restaurants we found in Cozumel with kids. This charming spot pays homage to the golden age of cantinas, blending tradition, community, and exceptional Mexican flavors. 

The outdoor seating was perfect for a breezy evening. The food? Incredible. The molcajete was a showstopper—easily one of the best dishes I’ve ever had on vacation. While there isn’t a specific kids’ menu, the friendly staff were quick to recommend options that worked well for our daughter. The mix of history, flavor, and welcoming vibes made it our favorite meal on the island.

After dinner, stroll over to Flamingo Ice Cream Bar for dessert. Located off the main square in the port area, this colorful shop offers a variety of unique and classic flavors. The creamy scoops and playful atmosphere are the perfect way to end the evening with kids. 

Day 3 in Cozumel with Kids: Punta Sur

Day 3 features a full day of fun things to do in Cozumel with kids, including even more beaches, snorkeling, and wildlife. If you only spend one day exploring Cozumel, make it this day! Punta Sur is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful parts of the island. 

Start with Breakfast at Crazy King Burrito

Start your day with breakfast at Crazy King Burrito, a must-visit on any itinerary for Cozumel with kids. Located near the port, this family-run spot serves dynamite burritos made fresh daily, by hand. Whether you’re dining indoors, outdoors, or grabbing your meal to go, the super-friendly staff ensures a welcoming experience. 

The menu offers plenty of variety, and every bite bursts with authentic flavor. We loved everything we tried—just be aware they’re cash-only. The relaxed atmosphere, reasonable prices, and fresh, made-to-order burritos make it one of the best restaurants in Cozumel with kids. It’s the perfect way to fuel up before a day of exploring the island!

Rent a Jeep and Take a Little Road Trip to Punta Sur

We’ve reached my favorite stop on this itinerary for Cozumel with kids!

Renting a jeep and heading to Punta Sur is a MUST. The journey itself is an adventure, and several rental spots near the port make it easy to grab a jeep for the day—prices range from $40 to $100. The drive from the port to Punta Sur is about 30 minutes. If you’re not up for driving, there are some tour options, which I’ve included below.

Punta Sur, the island’s southernmost point, is part of a stunning 247-acre ecological park. As you move along the road through Punta Sur, you will see several marked places to stop by and explore. This protected area also features some of Cozumel’s best beaches with kids, reefs, lagoons, and lush forests teeming with wildlife. We spotted crocodiles, coatis, vibrant birds, and even lizards inside the park, making it a favorite for animal-loving kids. 

The park also offers a picturesque lighthouse, perfect for panoramic views, and a crocodile watch tower to peek into the lagoon. There are also several spots to relax or grab a bite. Just take the road past the lighthouse and stop when you find the place that suits you. Most restaurant stops operate like beach clubs, where you can grab a lounger or an umbrella, and food/drink service is provided while you enjoy the beach.

While the roads can be bumpy, the drive is worth it! Just keep an eye on your tires along the edges; we got a flat tire our first time here. The natural beauty and family-friendly excursions in Punta Sur make this stop worth every penny. Just don’t forget some cash for the park entry fee!

Dinner at Taqueria Hernández!

Away from the tourist district, dinner at Taqueria Hernández is an outstanding option for anyone seeking authentic and delicious tacos in Cozumel. We stumbled upon this hidden gem by chance, and it ended up being one of our favorite meals. 

As you walk up, the sight of meat roasting on a rotisserie and the mouthwatering aromas make it impossible to resist. Their al pastor tacos are among the best I’ve ever had—bursting with flavor and perfectly cooked.

This no-frills spot offers fast service, several menu options, and unbeatable food, making it one of the best restaurants in Cozumel with kids. The casual, open-air seating is perfect for families, and the straightforward menu keeps things simple. The tacos and tortas are fresh and packed with authentic flavors. Just remember to bring cash! 

Day 4 in Cozumel with Kids: Snorkeling + Pool Time

Day 4 of this itinerary for Cozumel with kids starts with a fantastic morning of snorkeling and ends with a rest afternoon at your accommodations. It’s okay to relax on vacation, too!

Breakfast at Quesadillas “La Palapa”

This might be the most Instagramable eatery on the island! Breakfast at Quesadillas “La Palapa” is a hidden gem and a lovely spot to start your day in Cozumel with kids. We found this peaceful eatery by chance after our original choice was closed, and it couldn’t have worked out better. The covered porch seating under the palapa roof creates a serene ambiance, complete with birdsong and lush greenery. Talk about a dreamy place to start the day!

The food is home-made with love and compassion for the ingredients and the people eating it. Everything we tried was delicious, from fresh-squeezed juices to perfectly prepared dishes like chilaquiles, sopes, and omelets, and the reasonable prices make it even better. It’s a spot where you can truly relax and enjoy a slow breakfast before diving into the day’s adventures. If you’re wondering where to eat breakfast in Cozumel with kids, make it this spot!

Book a Snorkeling Tour with Jeep Riders Cozumel Tours

Booking a snorkeling tour with Jeep Riders Cozumel Tours is a must for any itinerary for Cozumel with kids! This tour takes you to four breathtaking stops, including Palancar Reef, Colombia Reef, and the famed El Cielo sandbank, where crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life create an unforgettable experience. “El Cielo” truly lives up to its name, offering a slice of heaven with starfish, stingrays, and a dreamy sandbar perfect for snacks, and relaxing.

This was one of my favorite excursions in Cozumel! It was my daughter’s first time snorkeling; overall, she loved it. Admittedly, she got stung on one of the swims, which spooked her a bit. But she was brave and re-entered the water later. I recommend putting kids in long-sleeved swimwear and long swim pants, just in case. Wet suits or rash guards would work, too!

The crew is exceptional—attentive, kind, and skilled at ensuring everyone feels comfortable, especially kids new to snorkeling. The guide dives down to point out highlights like sea turtles, stingrays, and colorful fish, making this one of the best excursions in Cozumel with kids.

A shuttle from the main port makes transportation a breeze, and before you know it, you’ll be exploring the Caribbean’s underwater wonders! After the voyage, they arrange taxis to take you home or back to the port area.

Pro tip: Book a morning tour to beat the heat and enjoy calm tides. 

Spend the Rest of the Day at Your Accommodations

After a trip packed with adventures, it’s time to relax and recharge at your accommodations. You’re on vacation, after all! Whether staying at a beachfront resort or a cozy boutique hotel, spending the afternoon unwinding is essential for a balanced itinerary for Cozumel with kids. Let the little ones enjoy a dip in the pool or play in the sand while you kick back with a refreshing drink and take in the ocean views. Likely, everyone needs a nap today, too!

Dinner at Casa Mission is a delightful experience that blends elegance, traditional foods, and family-friendly charm. It’s the perfect spot to end a day of snorkeling and relaxing!

Located in a lush garden, this open-air restaurant offers a beautiful atmosphere, incredible food, and attentive service. It is one of the best places for families to eat in Cozumel. The menu features fresh seafood, traditional Mexican dishes, and perfectly crafted cocktails. Even the pickiest of eaters will find something to devour here!

We loved the on-site playground. Little ones can burn off extra energy while they wait for their food, or parents can relax and enjoy a quieter meal. With both indoor and outdoor seating options, plus live music to enhance the experience, it’s an excellent choice for a memorable evening. 

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just indulging in a fabulous dinner, this spot will impress. Reservations are recommended, especially for larger groups, and can easily be made online.

Day 5 in Cozumel with Kids: Take a Cooking Lesson

It’s your last day in Cozumel with your kids, so this is a great day to learn more about the local food and culture.

Take an Authentic Mexican Cooking Class with Jeep Riders Cozumel Tours

Take an authentic Mexican cooking class with Jeep Riders Cozumel Tours for a truly immersive experience on your itinerary for Cozumel with kids. This adventure begins with a guided trip to a local market, where you’ll pick out fresh ingredients for your meal while learning about the region’s unique produce. The vibrant market atmosphere is a treat for all ages, making this one of the best non-touristy things to do in Cozumel. We loved the market so much that we went back later in the trip to explore more!

After gathering your supplies, you’ll be welcomed into a local home, where the real magic happens. Under the guidance of a friendly host, prepare traditional dishes like handmade tortillas, fresh salsa, guacamole, and a main course of your choice—we made a Veracruz-style fish. There are vegetarian options, too! The group gets to decide what to make for the main dish at the market (with guidance from the host). Kids will love getting hands-on in the kitchen, and adults will appreciate the chance to make authentic foods, margaritas, and more.

The experience concludes with a shared family feast, featuring everything you’ve created. This class isn’t just one of the best excursions in Cozumel with kids; it’s also one of the best places for families to eat on the island because you’ve made the food yourselves! Plus, you’ll take home recipes to recreate the flavors of Cozumel long after your trip.

A Note About the Tour

Our tour also included a tequila tasting. It wasn’t listed on the booking, and still isn’t. In my opinion, this is easily skippable, and if I were to do the tour again, I would advocate for not doing it. The farm and learning about the history of tequila on the island are interesting, but our server was really pushy and soured the day’s experience a bit. If you’ve never done a tequila tasting before, you may appreciate this aspect of the day more than we did. I wholeheartedly recommend the cooking tour; it was one of the best experiences we had in Cozumel, but this aspect wasn’t necessary.

Walk Around Centro (the Port Area) + Do A Little Shopping 

If you haven’t already, now is a great time to walk around Centro. Or, the historic port area. This is the most touristy part of the island, so you’ll find a variety of restaurants, souvenir shops, excursion vendors, and more. When the cruise ships come to port, this area can get really busy, but traffic here slows in the late afternoon/evening. 

Stroll through the lively shopping streets, relax in the central plaza, savor local cuisine at nearby restaurants, and visit the historic Church of Corpus Christi. Centro is also where you’ll find Museo de Cozumel. The central plaza often hosts events, live music, and more. It’s a great spot to sit down and relax while enjoying the vibrancy of this area. Several food and souvenir vendors also line this plaza, making it one of the most vibrant parts of the island!

Dinner at a Local Taco Truck: L’esquitencanto

On your last night in Cozumel, head to L’esquitencanto for a casual yet unforgettable dining experience. This beloved local taco truck is perfect for families looking for a quiet, outdoor dining experience. 

The tacos are so delicious you’ll likely find yourself ordering a second round—just like we did! The friendly staff (expect little to no English), laid-back vibe, and authentic flavors make it one of Cozumel’s best places to eat. It was certainly a favorite for us! It’s the perfect way to cap off your final night on the island with a simple, satisfying, and undeniably tasty meal. Don’t miss it!
