The coffee? Perfection. The pastries? Equally amazing. My daughter couldn’t get enough of their mini Victorian sponge cakes, while I tried something new each time—everything was top-notch. The staff made us feel welcome, checking in regularly and making sure we were well taken care of. The Bakery

The Bakery is a charming family-owned spot perfect for a quick bite. Known for their delicious sourdough bread and pastries, they also offer fantastic sandwiches that are ideal for a late breakfast or lunch. 

While they have limited seating, it’s easy to grab your sandwiches to go and enjoy a picnic by the River Ness. My family loved the fresh flavors, and the epic size of everything. Throughout our month-long stay, we prioritized exploring as many local restaurants as possible, and we were consistently impressed. Trying local dishes and discovering new favorites quickly became one of the highlights of our time in the city. Black Isle Brewery

Black Isle Brewery quickly became one of our favorite spots in the city! Located in the city center, this kid-friendly restaurant in Inverness offers fantastic wood-fired pizzas paired with their delicious house-made beers. The pizzas are perfection!

The main dining area is spacious enough for large groups and takes reservations, making it perfect for family gatherings. If you’re traveling with a smaller crew, don’t miss the secret rooftop garden—it’s an enchanting place to enjoy a cozy meal! 

With 26 taps featuring their latest brews and a wide selection of craft beers from around the world, there’s something for everyone. Not a beer lover? They also serve organic cider, wine, and other drinks. The fresh ingredients come from their market garden and farm, ensuring a tasty meal every time. We found ourselves returning multiple times during our trip—it’s that good (which is why I know this is one of the best restaurants in Inverness with kids!).

The Kitchen Restaurant

The Kitchen Restaurant was hands down my favorite eatery in town. Tucked along the banks of the River Ness, this independent, family-run gem offers an unforgettable dining experience—not to mention great views of the river and castle! Plus, the ambiance is both modern and welcoming, making it perfect for families looking for a celebratory night out while on vacation.

The venison dish is absolutely unbelievable—one of the best meals I’ve ever had while traveling! They even have a dedicated kids’ menu to keep the little ones happy, too. We enjoyed both of our meals here, and I would go back again and again in a heartbeat!

The restaurant spans three floors, and I highly recommend making a reservation for a table on the third floor to soak in the fantastic views of the river and old city (just add a request in the notes section when booking). If you’re looking for a fancy meal out in Inverness with kids, The Kitchen is an excellent option!

Fig & Thistle

If you’re looking for a delicious night out in Inverness, don’t miss Fig & Thistle! This charming restaurant near the old city came highly recommended by a friend, and it certainly lived up to the hype. Its cozy atmosphere and incredibly friendly staff make it a delightful place to enjoy a meal with kids. 

The Fig & Thistle specializes in modern Scottish cuisine, and everything we tried was absolutely delicious! Open seven days a week, they cater to various dietary needs, ensuring everyone can find something to enjoy. I can’t recommend it enough; the food is absolutely dynamite. I hope you experience it yourself! It has indeed earned its top spot as one of the best restaurants in Inverness with kids.

Afternoon Tea at the Ness Walk Hotel

A highlight of our trip was indulging in Afternoon Tea at the Ness Walk Hotel! While planning our month-long adventure in Inverness, sharing this delightful experience with my daughter was at the top of my list. Fortunately, we managed to snag a reservation and enjoy a wonderful afternoon together!

Afternoon Tea at Ness Walk Hotel is simply enchanting. The tables are elegantly set, the staff is exceptionally friendly, and the expansive windows invite plenty of natural light, offering lovely views of the river and gardens. While there isn’t a dedicated kids’ menu, my daughter found plenty of delicious options from the standard selection. She sampled a little bit of everything and discovered several new favorites! Plus, gluten-free and vegan menus are available upon request—just be sure to select them in advance.

I recommend making reservations online to make the most of this wonderful, family-friendly experience in Inverness. The walk from the city center to the Ness Walk Hotel takes about 10-15 minutes.

The Rendezvous Cafe Inverness

The Rendezvous Cafe Inverness is a fantastic option for those wondering where to eat brunch or lunch in Inverness with kids. Nestled in the heart of the old city, this cozy spot offers a relaxed atmosphere with a fun Hollywood vibe. 

We loved stopping by for their delicious brunch—my daughter devoured the Nutella pancakes! Their menu has something for everyone, from classic Scottish dishes to light salads and hearty burgers. Plus, the cafe’s rich musical history adds a unique touch to the experience. Whether you’re craving a full Scottish breakfast or a tasty sandwich, The Rendezvous Cafe is a great spot for families.

The Victorian Market 

If you’re looking for a unique lunch spot that is sure to please everyone in the family, head to The Victorian Market. Located in the old city, this 19th-century shopping area is home to several independent eateries in a food hall environment, making it perfect for families with different tastes. One of our favorites was Bad Girl Bakery & Cafe, where we enjoyed delicious sandwiches and savory treats. 

Plus, the newly renovated Market Hall has a central seating area, so everyone can grab what they want and enjoy their meal together. It’s a relaxed, vibrant spot that showcases the best of Highland food producers—ideal for a family-friendly lunch.

Highland Food and Drink Trail

The Highland Food and Drink Trail is a must for kid-friendly places to eat in Inverness, featuring a wide variety of options! Situated along the River Ness, this up-and-coming food truck court offers a variety of tasty options that are sure to please the whole family. With both stationary and rotating trucks, there’s something for every taste, whether you’re craving a quick lunch or a relaxed dinner with stunning river views. 

We loved Auld Smokey Pizza—it’s some of the best pizza in town! And, it’s served out of a Land Rover..which is just cool!

The Castle Tavern

The Castle Tavern is a cozy spot to enjoy traditional Scottish fare, and we had one of our best meals here! The building, dating back to the mid-1700s, is filled with charm and history. I recommend arriving early, as it fills up quickly. This is where my husband tried the famed Scottish Cullen Skink dish, which he enjoyed very much. Meanwhile, I really enjoyed the Haggis Croquettes and one of the daily specials. Finally, my daughter enjoyed her kids’ menu selection.

If you can, grab a patio table for incredible views of Inverness Castle and the River Ness. Whether dining indoors or soaking up the atmosphere in the beer garden, the warm hospitality and selection of local ales make this family-run pub a fantastic choice for lunch or dinner. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists, offering a unique dining experience right in the heart of the city. Undoubtedly, this is one of the best restaurants in Inverness with (or without) kids!

EscoBar – Taqueria & Cocktails

Located in the old city, EscoBar – Taqueria & Cocktails is a fantastic spot for low-key Tex-Mex cuisine that the whole family will love. If you’re traveling with kids and need a break from typical travel food, this is the perfect place to satisfy those cravings for something familiar. It won’t entirely be like Mexican restaurants in the US…but it’s close enough!

With an extensive menu featuring Tex-Mex dishes, there’s something for every taste—whether you prefer bold spices or rich flavors. The restaurant is spacious enough to accommodate large groups and offers a dedicated kids’ menu. One of the best places to eat in Inverness for families with kids, EscoBar ensures a warm, welcoming atmosphere for everyone. Comfort Foods is a low-key, no-frills diner right in the city center. This cash-only spot lives up to its name, serving up hearty comfort food that hits the spot after a day of exploring. The portions are generous, and the staff is incredibly welcoming, making it a great choice for families who want a simple, satisfying meal. 

Just remember to bring cash—the nearest ATM is a bit of a walk (trust me on this one!). Even so, we still found this to be one of the best places for families with kids to eat in Inverness.

Uilebheist Distillery & Brewery is a great spot to unwind, especially on their inviting outdoor patio during the summer. We loved stopping by for happy hour before dinner. And, if you’re walking along the Ness Walk, it’s the perfect place to take a break! This hidden gem offers more than just drinks; they also provide informative tours that delve into the art of Scotch whisky production.

Located on the banks of the River Ness, its name means “monster” in Scottish Gaelic. It’s a nod to local folklore, adding a touch of magic to your visit. Finally, the distillery is also dedicated to sustainability, using the river’s energy to power its operations.

Miele’s Gelateria Inverness

For a delightful treat while exploring Inverness, head to Miele’s Gelateria, conveniently located near Leaky’s Bookshop and The Victorian Market. This local gem specializes in Italian-style gelato. Their 24 flavors include tempting options like Parma Violet, Ferrero Rocher, Kinder Bueno, and more. Even better, each batch is made fresh daily, ensuring you get the best taste in every scoop.
