Winter in Minnesota has a way of slowing you down (in the best possible way!). And, our recent family trip to Grand Rapids was exactly the reset we needed this winter. In February, we packed up for a cozy, multi-generational getaway with my husband, our daughter, and my parents. Our mission was simple. Embrace slow mornings. Soak up snowy lake views. And, of course, enjoy plenty of time together. This isn't my usual "epic" itinerary for a family getaway. In my opinion, winter in Grand Rapids shouldn't be. Winter visits to Grand Rapids, Minnesota, are made for rest and relaxation.

Our home base was a beautiful lakehouse just outside of town. It was the perfect place to do all the things we hoped to do. That said, we couldn't resist also venturing out to explore a bit. Winter in Grand Rapids with kids turned out to be both easy and rewarding. From low-key outdoor adventures to warm, welcoming spots around town, there are so many winter things to do in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, with kids-all without feeling rushed or overplanned. This guide rounds up what we loved most, including the best places to eat and stay in Grand Rapids with kids. Winter in Grand Rapids is relaxed, low-key, and very fun with kids of all ages! From December through March, families can expect snowy outdoor adventures, welcoming eateries and shops, and cozy cabins.

It's also an easy drive for families based in the Twin Cities (like us!). Grand Rapids is just over 3 hours north of Minneapolis.

Our family visited Grand Rapids in February. I found it an ideal time for winter adventures. Temperatures hovered in the 20s, and there was plenty of snow.

Lakes, forests, and trails surround this charming Northwoods town. Grand Rapids’s outdoor appeal makes it ideal for snowmobiling, winter hiking, and other family-friendly activities. Grand Rapids is also the birthplace of Judy Garland!

Where to Stay in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, with Kids

When planning a winter trip to Grand Rapids with kids, where you stay really sets the tone. For our multi-generational trip, the Mid Mod Lakehouse was a perfect fit. Tucked away on a semi-private lake just minutes from town, this mid-century modern lakehouse gave us space to spread out, slow down, and truly enjoy our time together.

Built in 1955 and thoughtfully updated, the lakehouse is the epitome of classic Northwoods charm and modern comfort. Nearly every room has lake views, and the great room has a stunning double-sided stone fireplace. This was our favorite gathering spot for games, reading, and just hanging out together. With four bedrooms (the house sleeps 8), it's ideal for families traveling with kids (and grandparents). The house even offers several kids' books, toys, and eating utensils.

Outside, the fun continues for all ages! The lakehouse also features a semi-private lake with a dock, a large cedar sauna, an outdoor fire pit, and a short on-site hiking trail. Mid Mod Lakehouse is undoubtedly geared for stays in every season. It's easily one of the best places to stay in Grand Rapids with kids. (And, one of our favorite Minnesota cabin stays ever!)

When it comes to winter things to do in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, there are plenty of highlights for kids of all ages! Our trip leaned into a simple, low-key mix of local culture and time outside.

The iconic Wizard of Oz carriage inside the Judy Garland Museum.

One highlight was the Judy Garland Museum! This stop was a hit for everyone. The museum is extremely well done. During the visit, you'll begin at a curated museum dedicated to the life and legacy of Judy Garland. It also covers the famous heist that happened here! Dorothy’s original Ruby Slippers are not on display. They were stolen in a 45-second robbery and never returned.

Next, you'll visit her girlhood home (attached to the museum). Informational placards help you envision her young life, which was creative and filled with music. The house has been beautifully restored and painstakingly decorated to resemble the home as it looked in Judy Garland's youth.

If you're traveling with littles, save time to check out the attached Children's Discovery Museum. Combination tickets make it easy to explore both. The museum truly feels designed for all ages.

We also squeezed in a quick winter hike at Savanna Portage State Park on our drive home. The Loon Lake Loop is just over a mile. It is mostly flat, scenic, and perfect for kids. The park is located en route between Grand Rapids and Minneapolis. If you aim to check off as many state parks as possible, this is an excellent pit stop. Alternatively, Schoolcraft State Park is about 25 minutes from Grand Rapids.

Beyond that, some of the best family-friendly things to do in Grand Rapids happened right at the cabin: reading, games, and snowy lake adventures. In Grand Rapids, less is definitely more.

Where to Eat in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, with Kids

A woman sets a table for breakfast at a cozy cabin.

Dining with kids during our winter visit to Grand Rapids felt refreshingly easy. No long drives or waits here! It was especially simple since our rental had a full kitchen, which encouraged slow, cozy mornings at home. For lunches and dinners, we made a point of exploring a few local favorites. Every stop delivered!

Brisket nachos from Rapids Brewing Company.

Our first night kicked off at Rapids Brewing Company. We lucked out with live music that instantly set a fun, welcoming tone to our weekend in Grand Rapids. With 16 house-made taps, a solid kids' menu, and genuinely excellent food, it's a great family-friendly option. The brisket nachos were the clear winner at our table (and absolutely worth ordering when you go!).

A tray filled with pasties from Pasties Plus in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

For lunch, we picked up pasties from Pasties Plus. This local gem came recommended by my favorite Minneapolis-based independent food critic. These traditional (and creative) pasties are made fresh daily and sold par-baked or frozen. They are PERFECT for lunch if you have kitchen access. We baked several varieties at home, and they were a huge hit. Though, the regular was my personal favorite.

Scallops on a winter plate from The Pines Restaurant.

Finally, The Pines Restaurant more than lived up to its "destination restaurant" reputation. This was another location that Kirstie (the aforementioned food critic) highly recommended. Seasonal, from-scratch, and unforgettable, it's easily one of the best places to eat in Grand Rapids with kids. And, the service is top-notch. Our server, Maddie, was a delight! That staff works hard to ensure everyone feels welcome and enjoys their food. I promise it will be a memorable night out! (Reservations are highly recommended.)

More Family-Friendly Restaurants

If you need a few more kid-friendly restaurant recommendations in Grand Rapids, these come highly rated from other family travelers and people I know:

  • Dottie’s Hometown Cafe (so sad that we missed this one!)

  • Pokegama Grill
  • Dragonfly Coffee
  • Spartan Deli
  • La Tequila
