Although I may be slightly biased, since my in-laws live there, it is perfect every season (especially in summer!). Grand Marais is about 4.5 hours from Minneapolis, making it ideal for families looking for a quiet, relaxing trip in the woods.

Head up north with your kids this summer to enjoy lovely Lake Superior views, epic hikes, and more. In the summer, Grand Marais offers mild temperatures, making it a welcome escape from the Twin Cities’ heat. In fact, sweatshirts are the hottest souvenirs in town!

I adore Crosby! Just 2 hours from the Twin Cities, it’s undoubtedly one of my favorite summer weekend getaways near Minneapolis for families. Honestly, I think it’s one of the coolest small towns in the state! It certainly keeps drawing us back year after year. Crosby is best for families seeking a weekend spent together outdoors hiking, biking, kayaking, or swimming. 

As one of the best family vacations in Minnesota, you’ll find plenty to do here for all ages. Start by renting a mountain bike or kayak to explore the area. In my opinion, Crosby is best enjoyed in the woods or on the water (or both!). Not only is it full of great outdoor activities, but the downtown area also features top-notch dining and cute shops. Here are some of my favorite things to do in Crosby with kids:

• Rent kayaks, crystal kayaks, or stand-up paddleboards from Cuyuna Outfitters. Cuyuna Outfitters can even arrange a drop-off and pick-up. I like Huntington Mine and Pennington Mine Lakes best 
• Swim in one of the nearby mine pit lakes (again, Huntington Mine Lake and Pennington Mine Lake are great options). The water is crystal clear and very clean!
• Go for a hike in the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area to take in epic views of the area. 
• Learn something new together at the Soo Line Depot Museum.
• Crow Wing State Park is about 30 minutes from downtown. It’s one of my favorite state parks!

Fun weekend getaways near Minneapolis with kids don’t get much better than Chisago Lakes! About an hour from Minneapolis, this area boasts five beautiful communities along Highway 8, including Chisago City, Lindström, and Taylors Falls. In my opinion, it’s one of the best Minnesota vacation spots for families looking for a quick trip with plenty of outdoor adventures and low-key, family-friendly activities.

The area is best known for its cute downtowns, kid-friendly hiking trails (including two excellent state parks), and inviting locals. Each community offers a variety of activities, places to eat, and places to stay. Since they are so close together, you can easily enjoy the best each has to offer in one trip! During your weekend in Chisago Lakes, fill your days with everything from canoe treks and hiking to boutique shopping and wineries.

Here are just a few of my favorite summer things to do from Chisago City to Taylors Falls for families:

• Check out the unique art installations at Franconia Sculpture Park. Some of the pieces are even interactive! Plus, the park is free. 
• Play a round or two of mini golf at Adventure Falls Mini Golf in Taylors Falls. Afterward, celebrate the winning golfer with malt or a burger basket at Taylors Falls Drive In.
• Take a tour aboard a historic paddlewheel boat on the St. Croix River with Taylors Falls Scenic Boat Tours. It includes a narrated tour of the area’s history and fascinating rock formations.
• Hike at Wild River State Park or Interstate State Park. Both offer great trails for all ages, interests, and abilities. Then, Allemansrätt Park is another excellent option for kid-friendly hikes!
• Trek along the St. Croix River by booking a One-Way Trip to Osceola from Taylors Falls Canoe & Kayak Rental. Pack a cooler, too; there are several excellent places to stop for a quick swim and a snack along the way.

My husband and I went to college in Duluth (it’s where we met!). Now, we enjoy returning to the city and exploring as a family. While I may be a little biased, I do think Duluth is one of the best summer weekend getaways near Minneapolis for families. Duluth is only about 2 hours from Minneapolis, making it an easy weekend trip for all ages (I’ve even done it as a day trip before, though I wouldn’t recommend that with littles in tow!). Families who want a mix of outdoor fun with urban amenities will love Duluth.

Ely, a delightful town in northern Minnesota, boasts a big heart despite its small size. Located just 4.5 hours from Minneapolis, Ely is an excellent road trip destination for families from the Twin Cities. The city is perfect for families seeking outdoor adventures, cozy lakeside cabins, and wildlife encounters.

As one of the main gateways to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), it offers a variety of family-friendly activities, from hiking and canoeing to exploring unique museums. Not to mention, learning about Minnesota wildlife, including black bears and wolves. We traveled to Ely with our daughter for the first time this year and were impressed by the beauty of the city. • Hiking! Ely is best explored on its many trails. Consider Trezona Trail Head (an easy, 3.9-mile paved loop trail) or Kawishiwi Falls (an easy, 1-mile loop with a waterfall).
• For more trails, head to Bear Head Lake State Park. We adore this park for its scenic trails that meander through secluded pine forests and around pristine lakes.
• Dorothy Molter Museum is dedicated to the life and legacy of Boundary Waters’ beloved “rootbeer lady” and the area’s natural and cultural history.

You’ll find hints of its Swiss roots throughout downtown, from chalet-style buildings to Swiss restaurants. Plus, there is no shortage of things to do here. If I were to go back to New Glarus with kids, this is what I would add to my itinerary:

• Embark on the self-guided New Glarus Cow Parade.
• Play together at Village Park, offering a lovely playground and green space.
• Swiss Historical Village to learn about the city’s Swiss beginnings and explore a historical village.
• Hike along the Sugar River Trail. Alternatively, New Glarus Woods State Park and Badger State Trail also offer several kid-friendly hikes.
• Learn something new together at the National Historic Cheesemaking Center in Monroe. This was one of the best things we did while we were in town!

Best Places to Eat in New Glarus with Kids

Here are our favorite places to eat in (and near) New Glarus with kids:

• Glarner Stube offers the best dinner in town. We loved this Swiss-style restaurant so much that we ate there twice!
• Fat Cat Coffee offers excellent breakfast and coffee. They have wonderful pastries!
• New Glarus Bakery is a must-stop for its Swiss-inspired pastries. You need to take them to go, so I recommend taking them to the nearby Village Park.
• Sugar River Pizza Co. has an excellent patio and great pizza.
• Try Baumgartner’s Cheese Store & Tavern in Monroe. It is Wisconsin’s oldest cheese store (it opened in 1931) and an excellent stop for lunch or dinner. They are best known for their Limburger sandwich.

Port Washington, WI

Port Washington is one of our favorite easy summer getaways from Minneapolis. Set along the shores of Lake Michigan, just north of Milwaukee, this charming harbor town offers a maritime character and laid-back beach days. And, the walkable downtown makes exploring simple, even with little kids in tow. Port Washington is about 5.5 hours from Minneapolis.

Spend sunny afternoons swimming and building sandcastles at South Beach Park (yes, real sandy beaches in Wisconsin!). Stroll the scenic 3-mile Harbor Walk past parks, gardens, and the marina, then pop into local shops and ice cream spots downtown. Kids love watching fishing boats at Rotary Park. Hiking Lion’s Den Nature Preserve is an easy win with all ages, too! And, climbing the historic lighthouse for sweeping harbor views is a must. Port Washington offers classic lakefront summer fun, making it one of the best weekend getaways near Minneapolis with kids.

Here are a few of our favorite things to do in Port Washington, Wisconsin, with kids:

• Explore downtown Port Washington, Rotary Park, and the marina.
• Take a hike together at Lion’s Den Nature Preserve.
• Tour the historic Port Washington Light Station. You’ll learn local history and enjoy beautiful views of downtown and the marina.
• Explore Harrington Beach State Park. Just 15 minutes from downtown, there are tons of trails, great views of Lake Superior, and more waiting for you here!
• Take a swim on the sandy beach at South Beach Park. You can even walk here from downtown!

Best Places to Eat in Port Washington with Kids

When you get hungry, try one of our favorite restaurants in Port Washington:

• Enjoy a memorable dinner at Twisted Willow Restaurant (our favorite restaurant in town).
• Delicious, casual, family-friendly meals are available at The Beacon Restaurant (breakfast or dinner).
• In the heart of downtown, The Steerage Dining Saloon is a homey spot for lunch or dinner (try the Reuben!).
• Grab a coffee or breakfast at Java Dock Café. It’s super close to downtown and has several tasty options!
• Try Big Baby Subs for an easy lunch with your family. They have great sandwich options!

Pella, IA

Pella is a charming Dutch-inspired town in Iowa. Just 4.5 hours south of the Twin Cities, Pella is one of my new favorite weekend getaways near Minneapolis with kids. The city is perfect for families seeking a lovely getaway with small-town charm and a European vibe. Everywhere you turn, you can get a sense of the town’s Dutch beginnings, from its architecture and canal to its restaurants and immaculately clean streets.

The city truly comes to life in the springtime with thousands of colorful blooms (more than 300,000, in fact!). You can see them in every color, from black to multi-hued blossoms. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a visit during the summer! There are many fun things for families to do in Pella, including unique attractions inspired by its Dutch roots. Our recent visit far exceeded our expectations, and I highly recommend planning a trip to explore the area. If I were to go back, here’s what I would do again!

• Eat at Liberty Street Kitchen for the best food in town. Their outdoor patio faces the canal.

Families will also be pleasantly surprised by Lyon County’s food scene. From vineyard-side wood-fired pizza nights to creamy, farm-fresh ice cream stops, there’s something delicious around every bend. Add in hands-on experiences, nature-filled adventures, and easy outdoor exploring, and you’ve got a Midwest road trip that feels both refreshing and memorable.

• Visit the many cute towns of Lyon County, including Alvord, Larchwood, and Rock Rapids (this was the cutest one in my opinion!).

• Calico Skies Vineyard & Winery is a must-stop on your visit to Lyon County. They have games and plenty of snacks to keep kids happy.
• One of the quirkiest things to do in Lyon County is to visit the exact point where Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota all meet!

When you visit Lyon County, Iowa, here’s where to eat:

• Blind Butcher Brewing Company for apps, food truck appearances, and an upstairs arcade.
