Grand Marais always has our hearts! It is, hands down, one of my favorite Minnesota vacation spots. Though I may be slightly biased since my in-laws live there, it is perfect every season, especially during the summer. Grand Marais is about 4.5 hours from Minneapolis, making it ideal for families looking for a quiet, relaxing trip in the woods.

Head up north with your kids this summer to enjoy lovely Lake Superior views, epic hikes, and more.   • Embark on a harbor and Lake Superior tour aboard Grand Marais’s flagship, the Hjørdis.
  • Throw rocks in Lake Superior from the Grand Marais Harbor. Afterward, walk out to the Grand Marais Lighthouse or along the Artists’ Point trails.
  • Go for a hike! Some of our favorite trails are in Cascade River State Park, Oberg Mountain, and Judge C.R. Magney State Park. 
  • Visit Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center in Schroeder. This lovely nature center has cozy indoor displays and trails that lead to a rocky beach.
  • Learn something at Grand Portage National Monument, offering a well-curated museum and a reconstructed fur trade village. There are also several hiking trails here, too (we like Mount Rose Trail!).
  • Try the alpine slide at Lutsen Mountains! You can also ride the gondola during the summer. At the top, you’ll find a chalet restaurant, excellent views, and trails to explore.
  • Drive up the Gunflint Trail to check out Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center. This nature center offers a great museum and easy nearby trails.
  • Located in the heart of Grand Marais, the Cook County History Museum is an excellent place to learn about this former lightkeeper’s residence and some local history.

I adore Crosby! Just 2 hours from the Twin Cities, it’s undoubtedly one of my favorite summer weekend getaways near Minneapolis for families. Honestly, I think it’s one of the coolest small towns in the state! It certainly keeps drawing us back year after year. Crosby is best for families seeking a weekend spent together outdoors hiking, biking, kayaking, or swimming. 

As one of the best family vacations in Minnesota, you’ll find plenty to do here for all ages. Start by renting a mountain bike or kayak to explore the area. In my opinion, Crosby is best enjoyed in the woods or on the water (or both!). Not only is it full of great outdoor activities, but the downtown area features top-notch dining and darling shops to browse in. If you’re looking for fun Minnesota weekend getaways for families, put Crosby on your list! Next, I’ve shared my top recommendations for things to do, as well as places to eat and stay in Crosby with kids.

Here are some of my favorite things to do in Crosby with kids:

  • Rent mountain bikes from Cykel Bike Shop (Ironton). Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area is a great option for kid-friendly trails.
  • Rent kayaks, crystal kayaks, or stand-up paddleboards from Cuyuna Outfitters. Cuyuna Outfitters can even arrange a drop-off and pick-up. The area has several beautiful pit mine lakes to explore, including Huntington Mine Lake and Pennington Mine Lake. 
  • Swim in one of the nearby mine pit lakes (again, Huntington Mine Lake and Pennington Mine Lake are great options). The water is crystal clear and very clean!
  • Go for a hike in the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area to take in epic views of the area. 
  • Meet the massive Serpent on the shores of Serpent Lake!
  • If you have young kids, play at the pirate-themed playground near Serpent Lake.
  • Learn something new together at Soo Line Depot Museum.
  • Crow Wing State Park is about 30 minutes from downtown. One of my favorite state parks, it showcases fantastic waterfront trails and several places to learn about local history.

Fun weekend getaways near Minneapolis with kids don’t get much better than Chisago Lakes! About an hour from Minneapolis, this area boasts five beautiful communities along Highway 8, including Chisago City, Lindström, and Taylors Falls. In my opinion, it’s one of the best Minnesota vacation spots for families looking for a quick trip with tons of outdoor adventures and low-key, family-friendly things to do together.

The area is best known for its enchanting downtowns, kid-friendly hiking trails (including two excellent state parks), and inviting locals. Each community offers various fun things to do, places to eat, and places to stay. Since they are so close together, however, you can certainly enjoy the best each has to offer in one trip! During your weekend in Chisago Lakes, you can fill your days with everything from canoe treks and hiking to boutique shopping and lazy afternoons spent at wineries.

Best Summer Things to Do in Chisago Lakes with Kids

Here are just a few of my favorite summer things to do from Chisago City to Taylors Falls for families:

  • Check out the unique art installations at Franconia Sculpture Park. Some of the pieces are even interactive! Plus, the park is free. 
  • Play a round or two of mini golf at Adventure Falls Mini Golf in Taylors Falls. Afterward, celebrate the winning golfer with malt or a burger basket at Taylors Falls Drive In.
  • Take a tour aboard a historic paddlewheel boat on the St. Croix River with Taylors Falls Scenic Boat Tours. It includes a narrated tour of the area’s history and fascinating rock formations.
  • Hike at Wild River State Park or Interstate State Park. Both offer great trails for all ages, interests, and abilities. Then, Allemansrätt Park is another excellent option for kid-friendly hikes!
  • There are two family-friendly wineries in Chisago Lakes. Both offer a great selection of wine and food. Wild Mountain Winery is a bit more rustic, while Winehaven Winery is a bit more chic. Personally, I prefer Winehaven.
  • Trek along the St. Croix River by booking a One-Way Trip to Osceola from Taylors Falls Canoe & Kayak Rental. Pack a cooler, too; there are several excellent places to stop for a quick swim and a snack along the way.
  • Grab an ice cream cone from Anderson’s Ice Cream Shoppe in Lindström!

  • Coffee Talk (Taylors Falls) is another excellent spot for coffee. Go early to get a morning bun! Once they run out of food, they are out for the day.
  • Gustaf’s On Main Eatery (Lindström) serves a fantastic all-day breakfast, plus sandwiches, wraps, and other lunch items. They also have pie and ice cream!
  • The Drive In Restaurant (Taylors Falls) is one of our favorite spots! They feature a classic car hop experience with top-notch burgers and malts. 
  • Schoony’s Malt Shop & Pizzeria (Taylors Falls) is a fantastic spot for pizza, malts, and ice cream with kids.
  • The Stone Inn (Chisago City) offers a huge indoor dining room and an extensive menu (including things like burgers andbroasted chicken), including a kids’ menu. 
  • The Northern Lake Tavern & Grill is a cabin-style eatery with waterfront views. The menu features appetizers, wraps and tacos, flatbread pizzas, and more. There is also a kids’ menu.
  • Uncommon Loon Brewing Company (Chisago City) is a fun, family-friendly brewery with a huge outdoor patio. While they have some packaged snacks, they do not offer any prepared food.

Duluth

My husband and I went to college in Duluth – it’s where we met! Now, we enjoy returning to the city and exploring as a family. While I may be a little swayed by our time here during college, I do think Duluth is one of the best summer weekend getaways near Minneapolis for families. Duluth is only about 2 hours from Minneapolis, which makes it an easy weekend trek for all ages (I’ve even done it as a day trip before, though I wouldn’t recommend doing that with littles in tow!). Families who want a mix of outdoor fun with urban amenities will love Duluth.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Superior, Duluth has so much to offer families with kids of all ages, from outdoor activities to excellent museums. The city is primed for family fun!   • Hang out in Canal Park! Just wandering about and watching the huge ships pass through the aerial lift bridge is enough to have fun in Duluth. 
  • Great Lakes Aquarium is a must with kids, offering tons of hands-on exhibits and exhibits.
  • If you are traveling with young kids, add Lake Superior Zoo or the Duluth Children’s Museum to your itinerary, too. 
  • Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center is a free museum in Canal Park where you can learn more about the large ships that pass through the port and local maritime history. 
  • Get ON a historic vessel with your kids when you tour the William A. Irvin Museum.
  • Glensheen Mansion has self-guided tours of its historic home and gardens. The well-preserved rooms and gardens are beautiful, though the tour is likely best for older kids and teens.
  • Vista Fleet Boat Tours is a great addition to any itinerary for families who want to get on the water. They offer various summer tours, featuring everything from sightseeing to dining cruises.
  • Duluth offers top-notch hiking trails for families! Kid-friendly trails can be found at Chester Park Loop, Lester Park Trail, or Hartley Nature Center. Nearby state parks include Jay Cooke State Park and Gooseberry Falls State Park.

  • Uncle Loui’s Cafe is a must for at least one breakfast.
  • Canal Park Brewing Company is excellent for apps and drinks. It’s right in Canal Park and has a fun summer patio with lake views (they have a kids’ menu).
  • In Canal Park, Vitta Pizza features yummy wood-fired, Neapolitan-style pizza—delicious! 
  • Sir Benedicts Tavern on the Lake is one of our go-to eateries in Duluth. This classic English-style pub offers exceptional sandwiches (and, a kids’ menu, too). In the summer, they have a patio and live music. 
  • Hungry Hippie Tacos, a sister restaurant to the one in Grand Marais, is located in the up-and-coming Lincoln Park Craft District. Go for the iconic puffy tacos and massive summer patio.
  • The PortLand Malt Shoppe is *iconic*. You will quickly fall in love with their old-school window-serve ice cream cones and other treats.

Pine City is a newly experienced destination in Minnesota for us! After a recent stay, we can assure you that this hidden gem is fantastic for quick weekend getaways in Minnesota for families. Situated along Highway 35 between the Twin Cities and Duluth, it’s just an hour’s drive north of Minneapolis. Pine City is an ideal destination for families looking for a quiet getaway with small-town charm and few distractions. 

Pine City offers picturesque river views, an abundance of nearby state parks (in Minnesota and Wisconsin), and a quaint small-town atmosphere. It will surely enchant even seasoned travelers! We loved Pine City for its quiet trails and delicious hometown cooking. If you are looking for weekend getaways near Minneapolis with kids, don’t overlook Pine City!

  • Voyageur Park and Playground is set along the Snake River in town. It has a large playground, disc golf course, fishing pier, and plenty of grass for a picnic.
  • Explore and hike at one of the nearby state parks, including Governor Knowles State Park (in Wisconsin, just over the border; about 16 minutes from Pine City), St. Croix State Park (about 30 minutes away), or Banning State Park (about 30 minutes away).
  • Explore the Snake River Fur Post, where you can learn something new and discover stories of the fur trade!
  • Mountain biking trails are available in Chengwatana State Forest. The route is about 30 miles long and well-rated for beginners.
  • Paddling is widely available for canoers and kayakers. Rentals are available from Snake River Outfitters of Minnesota.
  • Fishing holes are located throughout the area, including along the Snake River and in the nearby state parks.

  • Mom’s Parkside Cafe is a quaint cafe in town that serves scratch-made soups, hot sandwiches, and burgers.
  • Cabina Coffee for coffee and a light breakfast.
  • Mia’s Cafe is a veteran-owned diner, which features comfort food at its best.

Ely, a delightful town in northern Minnesota, boasts a big heart despite its small size. Located just 4.5 hours from Minneapolis, Ely makes for an excellent road trip destination with kids from the Twin Cities. The city is perfect for families seeking outdoor adventures, cozy lakeside cabins, and wildlife encounters.

As one of the main gateways to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), it offers a variety of family-friendly activities, from hiking and canoeing to exploring unique museums. Not to mention, learning about Minnesota wildlife, including black bears and wolves. We traveled to Ely with out daughter for the first time this year and were blown away by the beauty of the city.   • The International Wolf Center inspired our recent trip to Ely, and it’s just as amazing as I hoped it would be. There is a small, but well-curated museum, an observation area where you can view the ambassador wolves, and several talks about the wolves throughout the day.
  • Hiking! Ely is best explored on its many trails. Consider Trezona Trail Head (an easy, 3.9-mile paved loop trail) or Kawishiwi Falls (an easy, 1-mile loop with a beautiful waterfall).
  • For more trails, head to Bear Head Lake State Park. We adore this park for its scenic trails that meander through secluded pine forests and around pristine lakes.
  • Rent a canoe from Piragis Northwoods Company and explore Shagawa Lake.
  • Dorothy Molter Museum is dedicated to the life and legacy of Boundary Waters’ beloved “rootbeer lady” and the area’s natural and cultural history. 
  • North American Bear Center is dedicated to educating people about black bears. You can even observe their ambassador bears!
  • Ely-Winton Historical Society features collections that share information about the unique history of Ely and the surrounding area.
  • Pioneer Mine Museum and Tour showcases many artifacts from the local underground mine.

Just 90 minutes from Minneapolis, Eau Claire has become a trending local travel destination lately – and it’s easy to see why! Eau Claire’s booming music and food scene make it the ideal place for families with older kids and teens. Meanwhile, those traveling with littles will delight in its recently renovated children’s museum and massive playgrounds.

  • Explore the Eau Claire Sculpture Tour. With 70+ unique installations, it is one of the largest self-guided sculpture tours in the country.
  • Attend a performance at the Pablo Center at the Confluence. The line-up is excellent, and there is even a free art museum inside, too.
  • Soak in the river views and take a stroll along Phoenix Park. You will also find the local farmer’s market on Saturday mornings!
  • Play at the huge playground in Carson Park. Then, challenge kids to find the Hank Aaron statue. He spent part of his early career in Eau Claire!
  • Splash and play together in River Prairie Park. The nature-themed stream and playground are perfect for littles. 
  • Take a hike and learn something new at Beaver Creek Reserve. You can also find kid-friendly trails at Big Falls County Park or the Chippewa River State Trail.
  • Traveling with littles? Hang out at the Children’s Museum of Eau Claire. Meanwhile, older kids may prefer the Chippewa Valley Museum or Wisconsin Logging Museum.

I grew up in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and frequently go back to see my family. Over the past several years, I’ve watched the city blossom into a wonderful place for families to visit and explore together. Undoubtedly, Chippewa Falls is a hidden gem among the best weekend trips near Minneapolis with kids. Known for its rich logging history, charming downtown, scenic lakes and parks, and the famous Leinenkugel’s beer, this Wisconsin town has become increasingly popular for weekend trips. Luckily, it’s only about 90 minutes from Minneapolis. Here, families will enjoy a nice blend of outdoor activities and low-key, kid-friendly attractions in a beautiful small-town environment. 

As one of the best Wisconsin weekend getaways for families, Chippewa Falls offers a variety of things to do and a great place to eat. Whether you want to tour a brewery, hit the beach, hike beautiful wooded trails, or stroll historic streets – you’ll find it all in Chippewa Falls!   • Explore Irvine Park & Zoo. This park features a large playground, a paved road, a small cave you can enter, and a zoo with animals like black bears and bison.
  • Kayak or swim on Lake Wissota. Ray’s Beach is a popular place to enjoy sunny days on the water.
  • If you’re up for hiking, try the family-friendly trails at Old Abe State Trail or Lake Wissota State Park. 
  • Check out the Chippewa Candy Shop to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Craving a touch of Europe in the Midwest? Plan a family trip to New Glarus, Wisconsin! Nestled in the lush hills of Green County, New Glarus was founded by Swiss immigrants in the mid-1800s. New Glarus is a fantastic choice if you’re searching for unique weekend getaways near Minneapolis with kids! The city is only about 4.5 hours from Minneapolis, and it is chock-full of fun things for families to do. I think the city is ideal for families seeking a mix of history, great food, and beautiful outdoor spaces. 

New Glarus has truly earned its title as America’s Little Switzerland. You’ll find hints of its Swiss roots throughout downtown, from chalet-style buildings to Swiss restaurants. Plus, there is no shortage of things to do here. From low-key playgrounds and scenic hikes to whimsical home tours and its iconic “cow parade”, New Glarus is filled with things to do for all ages. Here are our favorite places to eat in (and near) New Glarus with kids:

  • Glarner Stube offers the best dinner in town. We loved this Swiss-style restaurant so much that we ate there twice!
  • Fat Cat Coffee Works for an excellent breakfast and coffee. They have wonderful pastries!
  • Grab lunch at Chalet Cheese Haus. They only offer grilled cheese sandwiches, but they are delicious! You can also grab picnic items or ice cream here.
  • New Glarus Bakery is a must-stop for its Swiss-inspired pastries. You have to take them to go, so I recommend taking them to the nearby Village Park.
  • Dirty Dog Taphaus for happy hour, light bites, and patio games.
  • Sugar River Pizza Co. has an excellent patio and great pizza.
  • Sunrise Donut Café in nearby Monroe for coffee and delicious donuts.
  • Try Baumgartner’s Cheese Store & Tavern in Monroe. It is Wisconsin’s oldest cheese store (it opened in 1931) and an excellent stop for lunch or dinner. They are best known for their Limburger sandwich.

I would be remiss without including at least one city in Iowa on this list of fun summer weekend getaways near Minneapolis for families! We recently traveled to Pella, Iowa, and I absolutely fell in love with this charming town. Families seeking unique weekend trips near Minneapolis with kids will love this small town with a European flare!

Pella

Pella is a charming Dutch-inspired town in Iowa. Just 4.5 hours south of the Twin Cities, Pella is one of my new favorite weekend getaways near Minneapolis with kids. The city is perfect for families seeking a lovely getaway with small-town charm and a European vibe. Everywhere you turn, you can get a sense of the town’s Dutch beginnings, from its architecture and canal to its restaurants and immaculately clean streets.

The city truly comes to life in the springtime with thousands of colorful blooms (more than 300,000, in fact!). You can see them in every color, from black to multi-hued blossoms. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a visit during the summer! There are so many fun things for families to do in Pella, including some unique attractions inspired by their Dutch roots. Our recent visit far exceeded our expectations, and I highly recommend planning a trip to explore the area. If I were to go back, here’s what I would do again!

  • Meander along the Molengracht Canal and enjoy the Dutch-style architecture. 
  • Explore the grounds and blooms at Sunken Gardens Park, Tuttle Log Cabin, Scholte House Gardens, and Central Park.
  • Learn about the history of Pella and its Dutch roots at the Scholte House Museum (one of the most beautiful + well-preserved historic homes I’ve ever toured!).
  • Tour the Vermeer Windmill (one of the tallest working windmills in North America) and the on-site historical village (comprised of 22 buildings, including a bakery, blacksmith, the boyhood home of Wyatt Earp, and more!).
  • Catch the top-of-the-hour musical display at the town’s Klokkenspel.
  • Shop along Franklin Street and around Central Square.
  • Go for a hike along the Volksweg Trail. Or, explore Cordova Park and climb the observation tower.
  • Play together at West Market Park, a large wooden playground and park.
