A dad and his young daughter look at massive planes at the Fargo Air Museum.

This summer, we packed up our car in Minneapolis and made the easy 3.5-hour drive to Fargo! We had a blast exploring this North Dakota city together, and we think that you will too. The city is big enough to have an incredible (and very underrated) foodie scene, yet small enough to be easy to navigate with kids.

We loved how family activities in Fargo popped up everywhere. Wandering downtown murals and shops. Exploring local museums. Grabbing a sweet treat at one of the Midwest’s most iconic ice cream stops. Fargo has it all!

Downtown feels vibrant and welcoming, with plenty of spots for both kids and parents to enjoy. If you're looking for things to do in Fargo with kids, you'll find plenty of ideas to keep everyone entertained. This weekend itinerary in Fargo with kids is based on our own trip with our tween daughter. Spoiler, it turned out to be one of our favorite summer getaways near Minneapolis!

Tips + Packing List for Fargo with Kids

Antonia at the Red River Market in Fargo.

If you are planning a weekend itinerary for Fargo, North Dakota, with kids, there are a few things to know first. From checking the Fargo events calendar ahead of time to a few packing tips, remember these key points when planning your upcoming family trip to North Dakota.

A Few Tips

Here are a few of my tips for visiting Fargo with kids:

  • Everything is close together. Fargo is compact, so you can easily hop around without long car rides between attractions. This makes it simple to fit multiple stops into one day.
  • Mix indoor + outdoor fun. Summer can be hot; I recommend balancing outdoor time (at parks, farmers’ markets, and the zoo) with indoor activities (at museums).
  • Don't skip the food scene. Fargo has an underrated foodie spot and is surprisingly kid-friendly. Many restaurants have patios, fun menus, and plenty of space for families.
  • Check the Fargo-Moorhead event calendar. Festivals, farmers’ markets, and outdoor concerts happen all summer. Each adds something special to a weekend visit. Or, you can even plan a trip around one of their upcoming events!
  • Leave time for downtime. Playgrounds, splash pads, and hotel pools are perfect places to reset between activities.

Packing Tips for Fargo with Kids

In addition to the things you usually pack for a vacation with kids, don't forget these things for traveling to Fargo with kids:

  • Layers are key. North Dakota weather can swing from hot afternoons to cool evenings. Plus, there tends to be a lot of wind. Bring light layers, sweatshirts, and a rain jacket just in case.
  • Comfortable shoes. You'll walk a lot. Sneakers or sandals with good support are a must for kids and adults.
  • Swimsuits + towels. Between hotel pools, community pools, and possible water play along the river, swimsuits will get plenty of use this summer.
  • Snacks + water bottles. Even with all the great food stops, it's nice to have quick bites on hand between activities or back at the hotel.
  • Entertainment for downtime. A book, card game, or travel activity keeps kids happy during breaks. Or, on the drive from your home base (maybe, Minneapolis, like us!).

Arrive + Check Into Your Stay

A cozy bedroom in a apartment rental in Fargo for families.

We kicked off our weekend itinerary in Fargo with kids by checking into an Airbnb just outside of downtown. It had two bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a cozy living room-plenty of space to spread out throughout the weekend. The setup was perfect for us, with the flexibility to hang out (and play card games!) and relax in the evenings.

Dinner at Café Aladdin

Gyros and other favorites from Café Aladdin, one of the best Fargo restaurants with kids.

After checking in, head to Café Aladdin for a quick dinner. We stopped here before an outdoor concert (and it turned out to be the perfect choice!). The food was flavorful and satisfying without being too heavy, which meant we could enjoy the rest of the evening out and about.

For families, Café Aladdin is a hidden gem in Fargo. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the staff genuinely enjoys what they do. The menu is full of authentic, homemade Mediterranean dishes. Think stuffed grape leaves, fresh hummus, gyros, and perfectly grilled kebabs. Everything is made to order (and halal meat is available upon request).

If you're looking for a relaxed, casual meal that still feels vacation-worthy, Café Aladdin is one of the best places for families to eat in Fargo. Don't skip the gyro and hummus-they're must-tries!

Symphony Rocks at Bluestem Amphitheater

Symphony Rocks at Bluestem Amphitheater on a beautiful evening.

Looking for the best things to do in Fargo with kids? Check the Fargo-Moorhead event calendar! You never know what unique experiences will line up with your visit. For us, it was Symphony Rocks: The People's Playlist.

Held at the Bluestem Amphitheater, the venue itself is very cool, making the night feel extra special. We even caught part of a sunset during the show! Reserved seats sell out quickly, so grab those early if you can. Otherwise, general admission includes benches or lawn seating (just remember-no lawn chairs with legs, but cushions, blankets, or low seats are welcome). Outside food and drinks aren't allowed, but plenty of concessions are available.

The concert we saw was amazing! Imagine sitting under beautiful skies while the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony rocked out to everything from Star Wars to Hotel California and Don't Stop Believin'. It was a high-energy, family-friendly night we won't soon forget.

Day 1 in Fargo with Kids

Your first morning in Fargo sets the tone for the trip. Today is fun for the kids, has good eats for the parents, and includes plenty of surprises for everyone. After a smooth arrival the night before, it's time to officially kick off your weekend itinerary in Fargo with kids.

Grab Breakfast at Boppa's Bagels

A hand holds out a bagel from Boppa’s Bagels, with the bagel case in the distance.

Start your first morning in Fargo at Boppa's Bagels. This cozy eatery is perfect for a quick and satisfying breakfast. With TONS of bagel and spread flavors, choosing might just be the hardest part! From a simple toasted bagel with cream cheese to a hearty breakfast sandwich, there's something for everyone. They even serve smoothies if you want a fruity twist with your bagel. No wonder this is a top pick amongst the best Fargo restaurants with kids.

Personally, I can't resist the apple cinnamon bagel paired with maple walnut cream cheese-it's an elite combination. Boppa's is a must-visit local gem that delights with every bite.

Explore Downtown Fargo's Murals + Cute Shops

A dad and his daughter jump like Mario at an outdoor mural in Fargo.

After breakfast, explore Fargo's vibrant downtown. It is a treasure trove of murals, art, and cute shops.

Downtown Fargo is covered in colorful murals and other art pieces, from building walls to electrical boxes. Each block offers something new to discover! Hunting down murals is a fun way to get the kids moving while admiring local creativity. If you want to plan your route, this mural map will help make sure you catch the highlights.

Inside a charming shop with tons of unique finds in downtown Fargo.

Along the way, you'll find plenty of charming shops to pop into (filled with unique finds perfect for souvenirs or gifts!). With brick streets, tree-lined sidewalks, and flowers everywhere, strolling downtown Fargo is lively and surprising in the best way.

Lunch at Beer & Fish Company

Several fish dishes from a great spot in downtown Fargo.

When you're downtown (and craving seafood-yum!), Beer & Fish Company stands out as one of the best restaurants in downtown Fargo with kids. In fact, this was one of my favorite foodie stops on our trip! Everyone in the family loved the food and the laid-back atmosphere. I highly recommend trying the lobster tacos-they're a must in my opinion!

While there isn't a formal kids' menu, little ones won't feel left out. Picky eaters can choose from yummy options like chicken tenders and mac and cheese! Of course, parents can indulge in seafood favorites like fish tacos, fish and chips, and more. The restaurant is spacious and inviting (with indoor and outdoor seating). Tucked just off an alley decorated with vibrant murals, Beer & Fish Company is an excellent stop during your downtown adventures.

Spend a Sunny Afternoon at Island Park Pool

Island Park Pool, featuring its slides and lazy river.

Next, make a splash at Island Park Pool! My daughter absolutely loved this stop-she could have easily spent a full second day here. And, honestly, I could have too! The pool's compact layout makes it easy for parents to keep an eye on little swimmers while still relaxing. But I think you're going to want to get in the pool, too!

This centrally located summer fixture has been serving the community since 1977, and its newly updated design is incredible. Highlights include a zero-depth entry pool, water playground, several diving platforms, shade structures, a lazy river, and a three-story slide tower. There's also a tot area and two massive slides perfect for older kids. One of the slides is so intense, you have to sign a waiver for it! My daughter tried it once, but I was too chicken. As you can see, this is easily one of the top summer things to do in Fargo with kids!

Relax + Dine at Brewhalla

Spend the evening at Brewhalla, a lively food hall that has something for everyone. With indoor, outdoor, and terrace seating, it's perfect for families who want to unwind, explore, and enjoy a meal together all in one spot.

A pizza from The Bird Woodfire Pizza inside Brewhalla.

For dinner, we loved Unicorn Park Fine Foodery. They offer scratch-made, sustainably sourced burgers with a playful twist. The Double NoDak Smash Burger is indulgent and delicious. If your family loves pizza, The Bird Woodfire Pizza lets you build your own wood-fired pies or try one of their specialty options. Pizza is always a hit with kids and parents alike. I went for a burger, while my husband and daughter ordered pizza. The brews from Drekker Brewing Company paired well with both.

Finish the evening on a sweet note with Duchessa Gelato. Here, artisan gelato is made from local milk straight from the farm. Each flavor is creamy and delicious!

Brewhalla also features a variety of shops and vendors, offering everything from cheese to gifts and games. It's a one-stop spot to relax, eat, and play, making it one of the best places to eat and unwind in Fargo with kids.

Day 2 in Fargo with Kids

Day 2 in Fargo with kids includes two outstanding stops that are genuinely unique to Fargo-Moorhead (compared to other Midwest destinations). Ready to dive into more things to do in Fargo with kids? Today features hands-on attractions, cheering on the home team, and yummy sweet treats. It's a day that's sure to keep everyone entertained!

Grab Coffee at Twenty Below Coffee Co. in Downtown Fargo

A hand holds out an iced latte in downtown Fargo.

Start Day 2 of your weekend in Fargo at Twenty Below Coffee Co. in downtown Fargo. I'm still dreaming about their coffee! I can't recommend this spot enough. If you're searching for kid-friendly coffee shops in downtown Fargo, this place is perfection. It's also Fargo's only independent coffee roaster (making it a true local gem!).

The menu offers everything from classic pour-overs to creative, adventurous coffee drinks. Plus, pastries and heartier breakfast bites that make it easy to linger. What really sets Twenty Below apart for families is the game area tucked in the back. Slow vacation mornings? Yes, please! With cozy indoor seating and a few outdoor tables, Twenty Below Coffee Co. offers a welcoming and relaxed start to your morning. Not to mention, an authentic taste of Fargo at its best.

Look for Breakfast + Souvenirs at Red River Market

Veggies at a vendor stand at the Red River Market.

I LOVE a local farmers’ market! And, this one was no exception.

Red River Market is undoubtedly one of the top weekend activities for families in Fargo. North Dakota's largest farmers market, Broadway Square in downtown Fargo, transforms every Saturday (from July through October) into a lively community gathering place.

Indian tacos from a food truck at the Red River Market in Fargo.

On one side, you'll find fresh produce, flowers, bread, and handmade goods (like ceramics, candles, and jewelry). On the other side of the street, there's food, drinks, and even alcohol for the adults. We grabbed a few Indian tacos, and a few other snacks, to munch on while we explored the market! I'm positive you'll find something everyone in your family will enjoy for breakfast or an early lunch at the Red River Market.

We happened to visit on Kids Day, which meant extra games and activities that kept our daughter entertained while we browsed. Each weekend has a unique theme (like Pride at the Market, Arts Day, or BBQ Day). Live music and cultural performances enhance the festive atmosphere, making it a lovely spot for breakfast and continuing to explore downtown Fargo together.

Meet the Creatures at the MSUM Oceanarium

A man and his young daughter look for ocean creatures at the Oceanarium at MSUM.

One of the most unique experiences on our weekend itinerary in Fargo with kids was a visit to the Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) Oceanarium. This interactive marine lab is small but packed with opportunities to learn and explore. With two rooms full of tanks, visitors can see everything from puffer fish, jellyfish, and seahorses to crabs, sea urchins, and hermit crabs.

A young girl looks at a tidal pool aquarium in Moorhead.

Kids can touch shells, observe with stingrays, and even see a working tidal pool tank. Friendly, knowledgeable staff make the visit engaging and educational. There are little games sprinkled throughout the rooms to keep visitors entertained.

This was, by far, our favorite stop of the trip! (Tip: bring cash or a check for admission.)

Grab a treat at The Original Moorhead Dairy Queen

The exterior of The Original Moorhead Dairy Queen.

No weekend itinerary in Fargo with kids is complete without a stop at The Original Moorhead Dairy Queen (just a few blocks from the Oceanarium, and on your way back to Fargo).

This isn't just a dessert stop. It's a slice of local history! Known as the birthplace of the world-famous Dilly Bar, this walk-up DQ has been serving the community since the 1950s. In fact, it still operates under its original 70-year-old franchise contract!

Me and my dilly bar in front of the world's largest dilly bar at The Original Moorhead Dairy Queen, one of the best Fargo restaurants with kids.

Kids will love the giant Dilly Bar statue out front. It's the largest Dilly Bar in the world! Meanwhile, parents can appreciate the nostalgia of hand-dipped treats made the old-fashioned way. With a large outdoor seating area, it's the perfect spot to enjoy a little treat on a sunny afternoon.

Note that there is no indoor seating. This stop is only open seasonally from March through October, so plan accordingly for your visit.

Enjoy Lunch at Rhombus Guys

Overhead of three personal pizzas from Rhombus Guys.

For a fun lunch stop in downtown Fargo, head to Rhombus Guys. While the pizza alone is reason enough to visit, the experience goes beyond the food. The menu is huge, featuring everything from Detroit-style pies to creative, unique flavor combinations that are perfect for sharing.

Parents and kids alike will love the family-friendly atmosphere. Large booths make it easy to spread out. And, the coloring tablecloths keep little ones entertained while waiting for your meal. There's technically a kids' menu, but most families find the pizzas so shareable that it isn't even necessary. Add in daily specials, friendly staff, and a retro pizza vibe, and Rhombus Guys earns a top spot as one of the best Fargo restaurants with kids.

See the Big Planes at the Fargo Air Museum

Antonia and her husband sit in a plane cab at the Fargo Air Museum.

Next, take your family to the Fargo Air Museum. This premier aviation destination showcases aircraft from every era, including a highly accurate recreation of a Wright Brothers' flyer. Many of the planes are still able to fly. You might even hear the roar of engines as a demonstration takes place (talk about an unforgettable experience for kids!).

A dad and his daughter read an exhibit on Charles Lindbergh.

One of the best family things to do in Fargo, the museum spans two hangars filled with full-size planes, military memorabilia, and rotating exhibits. As Minnesotans, we really enjoyed the exhibit on Charles Lindbergh. There's also a kids' play area, an aviation library, and a gift shop. Visitors can explore on their own, join an audio tour, or schedule a group tour for a more in-depth experience.

Attend a Redhawks Baseball Game

A beautiful night for baseball at a Redhawks Baseball Game.

Wrap up day 2 of your weekend itinerary by heading to a Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks game with your kids. This independent minor league baseball team plays in a friendly, family-oriented atmosphere where everyone can enjoy the fun of the game.

The stadium is intimate. There are truly no bad seats, so every spot has a great view of the field. Kids will love the playground inside the grounds. Plus, in-between-inning entertainment keeps the crowd engaged.

There's also a huge variety of food and drink options-perfect for grabbing a casual dinner while cheering on the team. Parking is easy and affordable (I think we paid $3), making it stress-free for families. No wonder this is one of the best summer things to do in Fargo for families!

Day 3 in Fargo with Kids

Day 3 in Fargo with kids gives you one last morning to soak up the city before you head out of town. With a few final stops and fun things to do in Fargo with kids, it's the perfect end to a fun family weekend in North Dakota.

This funky, family-friendly spot features a large menu with a mix of homey classics and inventive twists. They also offer daily brunch specials, making it a local favorite!

Kids will appreciate the dedicated menu designed just for them. Meanwhile, parents will find plenty of standout options. I loved the Breakfast Rolls. They are a savory twist on the cinnamon roll (both fun and delicious!).

While you wait for your meal, take in the whimsical salt and pepper shaker collection that lines the shelves and walls. Quirky, nostalgic, and charming, Marge's Diner is the perfect way to fuel up before your last few things to do in Fargo for families.

The Red River at Lindenwood Park in the rain.

Before heading out of town, spend your final morning at Lindenwood Park. Located along the Red River, the park offers tons of green space, gardens, and walking or biking paths. It is an outstanding park for kids to play in or for a family stroll before heading back to the car. Even on a rainy last day, we enjoyed catching glimpses of the river!

Kids will love the two playgrounds, including a fully adaptive playground for all abilities. Lindenwood also offers bike rentals and kayaks (ideal for families with more time in their schedule).
