- Pack bug spray (mosquitos and black flies are common in the summer) and sunscreen.
- Lake Superior is chilly all year round; consider rain boots for kids who want to get in the water!

Best Summer Hiking Trails near Grand Marais
If you’re traveling to Grand Marais with kids, you’ll undoubtedly want to add hiking to your itinerary! There are several great summer hikes in the area, whether you want to get out and stretch your legs or embark on an epic adventure.
For those seeking impressive views of Lake Superior, the Oberg Mountain Trail (moderate, 2.3-mile loop trail) is an excellent summer hike in Minnesota. Personally, I think Oberg Mountain is one of the best things to do near Grand Marais! In fact, it’s my favorite hike in Minnesota. I’ve done it in every season, and it never fails to impress. If you only choose one hike during your trip, choose this one!
Alternatively, Magnetic Rock Trail (easy, 4.3-mile out-and-back trail) is an excellent option for those exploring the Gunflint Trail or those wanting an epic adventure with kids. It will take up most of the day. This includes the drive from downtown Grand Marais, and a lunch stop afterward. Trail Center At Poplar Lake or Poplar Haus Restaurant & Bar are the best lunch options with kids on the way back to Grand Marais. However, the 60-foot monolith at the trail’s end is well worth the time and effort! In fact, this hike is one of my daughter’s all-time favorite hikes.
Finally, Temperance River State Park or Kadunce River Wayside Trail are also great summer options. Next, read my Family Guide to the 8 State Parks on the North Shore of Minnesota.
Search for Waterfalls near Grand Marais
Want to level up your hiking options near Grand Marais this summer with kids? Searching for waterfalls is one of my favorite summer activities on the North Shore! Several trails near Grand Marais lead to serene cascading falls. The closest (and easiest) waterfall to reach near Grand Marais is at Cascade River State Park. In fact, if you don’t want much of a hike and only want to see the falls, it’s only about a 5-minute walk to reach it from the parking lot. For a bit more of a trek, head past the falls to the bridge that crosses the river. This will make a loop back to the parking lot.
Alternatively, the iconic Devil’s Kettle double waterfall is located in Judge C.R. Magney State Park (moderate trail, 2 miles out and back). Once a place of mystery, kids will love this hike for its winding trails, immense staircase (~200 steps), and, of course, iconic double falls. One side of the falls goes directly over the edge, while the other simply disappears. The mystery of the disappearing water was only recently solved (it travels underground and resurfaces upstream).
Lastly, you can also head up to Grand Portage State Park. Nestled on the border of Minnesota and Canada (about 45 minutes from Grand Marais), this state park is home to the tallest waterfall in Minnesota! High Falls Trail (easy, 1.1 miles out and back) is a boardwalk/paved trail leading to the spectacular Pigeon Falls. Check out the indoor heritage center if it is open too (it’s free). Grand Portage State Park does not require vehicle permits, making it one of the only free state parks on Minnesota’s North Shore all year round.

Hike + Visit the Heritage Center at Grand Portage National Monument
Looking for one more fantastic summer hike near Grand Marais? Add Mount Rose (easy, 1.2-mile loop trail) to your itinerary. This kid-friendly trail is located at Grand Portage National Monument, about 40 minutes from downtown Grand Marais. There are two trailheads (one opposite the parking lot, and one a short walk down from the Heritage Center).
I recommend taking the trailhead past the Heritage Center for a shorter hike. The trail offers several stunning views of Lake Superior. On a clear day, you can even see Mount Josephine and Isle Royale! Note, however, that the trail can be very steep in some areas and includes some rustic stairs. Even so, it’s one of my favorite summer things to do with kids in Grand Marais!
Afterward, head inside and explore the interactive exhibits within the Grand Portage National Monument Heritage Center. This center offers exhibits on the history of the Anishinaabe peoples and culture and the impact of the fur trade on this area. Because it’s a national monument area, kids can do the Junior Ranger program! During our visits, we always learn so much together. In my opinion, it’s a must-stop for anyone traveling to the North Shore this summer.
Catch a Sunset over the Lighthouse
When you visit Grand Marais in the summer, you must enjoy at least one sunset at the Grand Marais Lighthouse. The sunsets here are UNREAL! Arrive at the lighthouse about 20-30 minutes before sunset and simply enjoy. If you’re not up for the trek to the lighthouse, sunset can also be enjoyed from the patio or rooftop bar at Voyageur Brewing Company.
Alternatively, you can catch a sunrise over Artists’ Point (the opposite side from the lighthouse). Walk through the woods, or along the lakeside rocks to the end of the point. The sunrise here is truly outstanding and shouldn’t be missed if you are an early riser!
This is one of my favorite Grand Marais things to do in every season. And, something I rarely miss when visiting my in-laws. Finally, a quick Google search will tell you the sunset or sunrise times and if it will be too overcast to catch the sun.
Enjoy the Harbor + Downtown Grand Marais
Exploring the harbor and downtown Grand Marais is a great way to explore the area and support local businesses. In fact, Artists’ Point and the Grand Marais Lighthouse are two of the most iconic places in town. You can easily reach them both from downtown, either by car or by foot. Once you arrive, spend time walking around and enjoying the views.
Likewise, it’s a great time to check out the harbor beach. Here, kids (and kids at heart) will love searching for rocks to skip across the water. If you’re lucky, you may even come across a coveted agate!
Then, if you want to go shopping, here are my favorite local shops to peek into:
- The Big Lake Life (I rarely leave town without stopping here!)
- Roam & Whimsy Co. (one of the newest + cutest shops in town!)
- Upstate MN
- Drury Lane Books
- Sivertson Gallery
- The Fisherman’s Daughter
- Beth’s Fudge & Gifts
- Joy & Company
Drury Lane Books offers a lovely Summer Children’s Story Hour if you have littles in tow. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, on Saturdays at 11:00 am, The Muffin Man regales families with his favorite picture books and jokes on the beachside. It is one of the best story hours we’ve ever been to!
Finally, the Cook County History Museum is open in the summer (Thursdays to Saturdays only). You can visit the former lightkeeper’s residence at this museum, built in 1896. It has a great collection of exhibits to learn more about local history. If you’re traveling with kids, this is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Grand Marais this summer.

Sail Aboard the Hjørdis
Embarking on a tour with Grand Marais’s flagship (and her iconic purple-ish sails) is a must when visiting Minnesota’s North Shore this summer! We loved our time sailing on the Hjørdis and highly recommend the experience to families.
The sailing tour is open to all ages (you can bring your own, familiar life jackets for kids, as you prefer, but they also provide life jackets for everyone). The schooner holds up to 6 guests per sail + staff. The summer sailing season is from late May to early October.
The tour departs from North House Folk School, and lasts about 1 hour and 45 minutes (with sunrise and sunset tours available). While aboard, the captain shares stories and a bit about the area’s history. Then, the views of Grand Marais Harbor and the Sawtooth Mountains from the schooner are unparalleled!
Then, be sure to dress warmly for your voyage. Even in the summer, it can be chilly on the water. You can also bring your own snacks and drinks aboard. This is undoubtedly one of the more unique summer things to do with kids in Grand Marais!
Putt n Pets Mini Golf
We love mini-golfing while on vacation! If you do, too, Putt n Pets Mini Golf is a charming 18-hole course that is perfect for a sunny summer day in Grand Marais. Open mid-May through October, it is located at the edge of town.
Once you get your putter and ball, you’ll tee off at the first green. Then, as you meander around the course, keep your eye out for furry and feathered friends who call this place home! Goats, turkeys, peacocks, and more critters are in their own spaces throughout the mini golf course. Kids will delight in challenging parents to a round of mini golf, while finding as many resident animals as possible! Plus, each green is uniquely designed for maximum fun. Finally, there is also ice cream available on-site to treat the winner! Undoubtedly, Putt n Pets is a great stop with kids of all ages.
Take a Moment to Relax at Sisu and Löyly
For a relaxing experience in Grand Marais, especially if you’re traveling with older kids (or without kids), book a session at Sisu and Löyly. This Nordic sauna experience by Lake Superior is an excellent addition to any summer itinerary. The saunas even offer a view of Artists’ Point! Alternatively, they also offer a floating sauna in the summer, which is docked at Skyport Lodge.
Upon arrival at the downtown location, change into the provided robes and slippers and head to your assigned sauna. You can control the steam level by adding water as needed, which is beneficial for those who may find saunas challenging to breathe in—like me! In fact, this is one of the best and most relaxing sauna experiences I’ve ever had.
Take a break from the sauna in the cozy outdoor bonfire area or indoor lounge. Brave souls may even opt for a plunge into Lake Superior (consult the front desk for safety guidelines and entry location).
Sauna use is available for kids ages 10 and up. If you want to relax or practice a little self-care in Grand Marais, this is one of the best places to do it!
Alpine Slide at Lutsen Mountains
If you are looking for thrilling summer things to do in Grand Marais with kids, add the alpine slide at Lutsen Mountains to your list. The slide whimsically twists and turns down the mountain, thrilling kids and adults alike!
Getting to the top of the mountain is half the fun! Once you arrive, you will grab your sled and take a ski lift up the mountain to reach the start of the twin alpine slides. The views are incredible! At the top, carry your sled to the beginning of the track and jump on. Wait for the light to turn green…and GOOOOO! The two tracks are parallel, which means adventurous families can race down the snakelike tracks together.
On the sled, riders can manually slow down or brake based on personal comfort (or desire for speed!). Families can get tickets for one ride down or an unlimited pass for the day. During our first visit, we only purchased a single ride. Learn from us; you’ll want to go down more than once (or at least your kids will)! I think it is worth it to spring for the unlimited day pass.
Afterward, you can also enjoy on-mountain restaurants, a scenic gondola, hiking trails with excellent views, and more. Families seeking fun summer activities on the North Shore will adore the many options available at Lutsen Mountains!
Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center
Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center is an excellent addition to any Grand Marais itinerary with kids in nearby Shroeder. This cozy nature center offers interactive stations, naturalists who can answer questions, and a kid-friendly hiking trail. Start inside the nature center. Kids can learn about local wildlife and plant life through the intimate exhibits. Then, they can also touch some of the bones and pelts, making the learning experience even more fun and engaging!
Outside, several bird feeders attract local bird species. Grab a bench to watch local birds munch on seeds and fly about. Plus, identification books are available for kids interested in learning their names. After watching the birds, walk along the 1.3-mile loop trail that winds through the woods and leads to the shores of Lake Superior.
Once you reach the beach, kids can wade in the water and climb on the large rocks. The loop is beloved for its spring wildflowers and fall foliage. Finally, check the events calendar before visiting, as the nature center hosts fun events throughout the year. Please note that a small cash parking fee is required. The last time we were there, it was $5.
North Shore Adventure Park
Do you have a daredevil in the family? Then, you’ll want to check out North Shore Adventure Park during your family trip. This thrilling park features multiple zip-lines and ropes courses about an hour south of Grand Marais, in Silver Bay. It is a great way to explore the treetops of the North Shore!
Kids will love dashing across the zip-lines and ropes courses. The park has five difficulty levels, each with multiple runs, so visitors of all skill levels can participate. Little ones, aged 3-6, have their own little park. Then, older kids and adults can access several treetop courses and zip-lines. For an added layer of excitement, one course features twin zip-lines and allows people to race one another! Finally, those 12 and up can also spend time with their parents at the on-site axe-throwing course (an added expense).
When you’re ready to take a break, picnic tables are located throughout the park. A small concession area offers Gatorade and small snacks to refuel.
Take a Scenic Drive + Explore the Gunflint Trail
One of the best ways to enjoy summer on the North Shore is to take a scenic drive and explore the Gunflint Trail. If you’re unfamiliar, the Gunflint Trail is the road that leads away from Lake Superior, heads northwest of downtown Grand Marais, and ends at Saganaga Lake (which borders Canada). The area along the Gunflint Trail is a haven for outdoor adventures, remote accommodations, and spotting wildlife (think moose, deer, and foxes). Indeed, this area is one of Minnesota’s most serene and secluded places. If you are looking for summer activities near Grand Marais along the Gunflint Trail, here are a few we recommend:
- Towering Pines Canopy Tour at Gunflint Lodge
- Renting a canoe from Rockwood Lodge and Outfitters to explore Poplar Lake
- Exploring trails and waterways in the Boundary Waters (there are several entry points along the Gunflint Trail)
- More Hiking Trails to Consider (in addition to those mentioned above): Honeymoon Bluff, Moose Viewing Trail, and South Lake Trail. For South Lake Trail, you can park at Rockwood Lodge and Outfitters.
- Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center (more on that next!)
Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center
Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center is one of my favorite places to take my kiddo when visiting Grand Marais in the summer. It’s about 75 minutes from downtown Grand Marais, but I think it’s well worth the drive! As one of the best summer things to do in Grand Marais with kids, this is a great place for families to learn more about local history. Plus, you can also hike, play, and more here.
Firstly, Chik-Wauk offers excellent programs and information about Ojibwe history, culture, and people, as well as early settler families to the Gunflint Trail. Then, the museum also introduces kids and their families to the natural wonders of Grand Marais and the Gunflint Trail. Kids who want a hands-on experience can participate in the Junior Ranger program, which covers more information about the area’s ecology and conservation efforts. Afterward, explore the outbuildings and one of the trails that wind through the grounds!
Play Games + Grab a Bite to Eat at Voyageur Brewing Company
One of my favorite low-key activities in Grand Marais with kids is playing games and grabbing a bite to eat at Voyageur Brewing Company. Sometimes, they have games available, but we usually bring our own, just in case. It’s an excellent spot for card games or small board games like Cribbage.
Located downtown, I think this is one of the best restaurants in Grand Marais! And, it is a must-stop for us whenever we are in town (as you can probably tell from our Instagram stories!). With a fireplace and plenty of seating, it’s an excellent spot for dinner and a pint.
The menu features many delicious appetizers and small plates, including Reuben eggrolls (a personal favorite!), pizza, charcuterie with smoked fish, soft pretzels with cheese, and more. They also have a yummy kids’ menu. After a full day of exploring some of the best Grand Marais summer activities for families, it’s a great place to end the day or spend a cozy afternoon.

- August: Grand Portage National Monument Rendezvous Days, and Celebration Pow Wow, Grand Portage
