  • Rent kayaks, crystal kayaks, or stand-up paddleboards from Cuyuna Outfitters and paddle along Huntington Mine Lake or Pennington Mine Lake. Cuyuna Outfitters can even arrange a drop-off and pick-up. 
  • Swim in one of the nearby mine pit lakes. The water is crystal clear and very clean!
  • Take in the epic views from the top of the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area (walk or drive—watch for bikes). 
  • Meet the massive Serpent and play at the pirate-themed playground on the shores of Serpent Lake.
  • Check out the incredible artifacts at the Soo Line Depot Museum.
  • Crow Wing State Park is about 30 minutes from Crosby and is one of my favorite state parks. The park offers waterfront trails and several places to learn about local history.

Duluth holds a special place in our hearts—it’s where my husband and I met during college, and now we love returning to explore as a family. Just a two-hour drive from Minneapolis, Duluth is one of the best Minnesota road trips with kids. Whether you’re into outdoor adventures or urban experiences, Duluth has something for everyone. 

With so many activities for kids of all ages, Duluth is a standout destination when looking for family vacation ideas in Minnesota. Families can do everything from hiking along the shores of Lake Superior and visiting top-notch museums to simply enjoying the scenic beauty of this lakefront city.   • Great Lakes Aquarium, the Lake Superior Zoo, and the Duluth Children’s Museum are all great stops with kids.
  • Tour the William A. Irvin Museum.
  • Glensheen Mansion offers self-guided tours of its historic home and gardens. The well-preserved rooms and gardens are beautiful (likely, the tour is best for older kids and teens).
  • Vista Fleet Boat Tours is an excellent addition to any family itinerary. They offer various summer tours, featuring everything from sightseeing to dining cruises.
  • Duluth also offers top-notch hiking for all ages! Kid-friendly trails can be found at Chester Park Loop, Lester Park Trail, and Hartley Nature Center. Plus, Jay Cooke State Park and Gooseberry Falls State Park are within a quick drive of Duluth.

  • Sir Benedicts Tavern on the Lake is one of our go-to spots, providing exceptional sandwiches (and, a kids’ menu, too). In the summer, they have a patio and live music. 
  • Hungry Hippie Tacos, located in the up-and-coming Lincoln Park Craft District, is a great spot to try a puffy taco. They have a massive summer patio, too.
  • The PortLand Malt Shoppe is *iconic*. Don’t miss their old-school window-serve ice cream cones!

New Ulm, MN

Just 1.5 hours southwest of the Twin Cities, this charming town offers a delightful mix of European flair and small-town warmth. Known for its rich German heritage, New Ulm is ideal for family road trips from Minneapolis—especially during the fall when the vibrant colors make everything even more magical. 

Start your visit with a cozy breakfast at Backerei & Coffee Shop before wandering downtown. Kids will love the whimsical Glockenspiel, which dances and chimes throughout the day. Of course, you can’t miss the 99-step climb up Hermann Monument for breathtaking views of the river valley and surrounding area. Finally, top off your experience with a German-inspired meal at Rathskeller at Turner Hall or Kaiserhoff.

Whether you’re canoeing on pristine lakes, hiking through lush forests, or discovering local wildlife like black bears and wolves, Ely has something for everyone in your family. 

Ely is also a fantastic place to relax in cozy lakeside cabins and explore museums that bring Minnesota’s natural history to life. We made our first trip there with our daughter last year and were blown away by how beautiful and family-friendly it is.   • Explore Bear Head Lake State Park, featuring trails that meander through scenic forests and around lakes.
  • Rent a canoe from Piragis Northwoods Company and explore Shagawa Lake.
  • You can visit a local museum, such as Dorothy Molter Museum, Ely-Winton Historical Society, or Pioneer Mine Museum and Tour.

Just 4.5 hours south of the Twin Cities, this picturesque Dutch-inspired town is perfect for families seeking a charming getaway. Pella’s small-town vibe, unique architecture, and canals will transport you straight to the Netherlands, making it feel like you’ve stepped into a European village. 

While the springtime tulip festival is a major draw (with over 300,000 colorful blooms!), the town is equally delightful in the summer. From exploring Dutch windmills to enjoying the local bakeries, there’s no shortage of fun for all ages. Our recent visit was filled with unexpected surprises, and I can’t recommend it enough for family road trips from Minneapolis. Here’s everything we loved about our time in Pella!
