  • Rent kayaks, crystal kayaks, or stand-up paddleboards from Cuyuna Outfitters and paddle along Huntington Mine Lake or Pennington Mine Lake. Cuyuna Outfitters can even arrange a drop-off and pick-up. 
  • Swim in one of the nearby mine pit lakes. The water is crystal clear and very clean!
  • Take in the epic views from the top of the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area (walk or drive-watch for bikes). 
  • Meet the massive Serpent and play at the pirate-themed playground on the shores of Serpent Lake.
  • Check out the incredible artifacts at the Soo Line Depot Museum.
  • Crow Wing State Park is about 30 minutes from Crosby and is one of my favorite state parks. The park offers waterfront trails and several places to learn about local history.

Whether you’re canoeing on pristine lakes, hiking through lush forests, or discovering local wildlife like black bears and wolves, Ely has something for everyone in your family. 

Ely is also a fantastic place to relax in cozy lakeside cabins and explore museums that bring Minnesota's natural history to life. We made our first trip there with our daughter last year and were blown away by how beautiful and family-friendly it is.   • Rent a canoe from Piragis Northwoods Company and explore Shagawa Lake.
  • You can visit a local museum, such as Dorothy Molter Museum, Ely-Winton Historical Society, or Pioneer Mine Museum and Tour.

Just 4.5 hours south of the Twin Cities, this picturesque Dutch-inspired town is perfect for families seeking a charming getaway. Pella's small-town vibe, unique architecture, and canals will transport you straight to the Netherlands, making it feel like you've stepped into a European village. 

While the springtime tulip festival is a major draw (with over 300,000 colorful blooms!), the town is equally delightful in the summer. From exploring Dutch windmills to enjoying the local bakeries, there's no shortage of fun for all ages. Our recent visit was filled with unexpected surprises, and I can't recommend it enough for family road trips from Minneapolis. Here’s everything we loved about our time in Pella!
