There’s something truly magical about visiting Grand Marais with kids—towering pines, the rhythmic crash of Lake Superior waves, historic lighthouses, and a charming, artistic downtown area. Our recent stay at Tide Cabin, part of Timber & Tide Cabins, was everything we love about the North Shore wrapped into one incredible family getaway.
With a front-row seat to Lake Superior, a spacious interior with summer cabin vibes, and even a wood-burning sauna, Tide Cabin felt like the ideal balance of adventure and relaxation. Our tween daughter loved playing PAC-MAN throughout the stay, while we soaked up the quiet moments and unbeatable views. Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly North Shore cabin or just dreaming of the best place to stay in Grand Marais, this spot delivers (keep reading to find out why!).
Indeed, if you’re planning a trip to Grand Marais, Minnesota, my honest review covers everything you need to know as you consider making Tide Cabin your home base.
About Timber & Tide Cabins in Grand Marais

Here’s a snapshot of what you need to know about the amenities and location while staying at Timber & Tide Cabins in Grand Marais, Minnesota, to kick off my review.
Location: The cabins are located on historic Croftville Road (the “walking road”) in Cook County, just minutes from downtown Grand Marais.
Timber is situated on the wooded side of Croftville Road, while Tide is on the Lake Superior side. They share a parking area, but all other amenities are their own.
Accommodation Type: 2 Cabins (Croftville Road splits the two properties, providing privacy). You can book them separately, or together.
Season: Both cabins are open year-round.
Best for: The cabins are perfect for any occasion or North Shore trip. They work just as well for a family vacation as they do for a girls’ trip! You can even book the cabins together for a larger party (up to 10).
Please note, however, that neither cabin is pet-friendly.

Snapshot of Amenities for Tide Cabin (where we stayed)
- Built in 1948, featuring charming summer camp vibes
- 2-bedroom, 1-bath log cabin (sleeps 6)
- Panoramic Lake Superior views
- 165 feet of shoreline
- Spacious living room with floor-to-ceiling windows onto the lake
- Office/game room with a dedicated workspace
- Well-stocked kitchen with a dining table
- Wood-fired barrel sauna facing the lake
- Fun amenities like a record player, PAC-MAN, books and games for all ages, and more
- 5 minutes from downtown Grand Marais (and only 15 minutes from Judge C.R. Magney State Park!)
Timber Cabin (1-bedroom, 1-bath) has its own layout and amenities. Smaller than Tide, it sleeps 4 people. Both cabins can be booked together to sleep 10. The sauna is only available at Tide Cabin (or if both properties are booked together).
My Review of Staying at Tide Cabin in Grand Marais

Honestly, we loved our stay at Tide Cabin this winter! The property truly blew us away, and it’s been one of my favorite stays in Minnesota so far. Here is my overall review of Tide Cabin and my impression of this North Shore cabin.
Would we recommend it? Without question, yes!
More on What We Loved

Waking up at Tide Cabin was an unforgettable moment—I literally said “holy shit” out loud when I saw the view for the first time (we arrived at night). The lake is *right* there—so close that you fall asleep to the sound of waves crashing against the shore and wake up feeling completely immersed in the beauty of the North Shore. I don’t think it’s possible to get closer to the water. If you’re looking for a North Shore cabin with epic Lake Superior views, this is it—you truly can’t beat them!

The cabin itself is pure summer camp nostalgia, with wood paneling, a well-loved PAC-MAN machine, and a record player that made our mornings extra cozy. We even spent one morning making pancakes together. My husband is an expert pancake flipper! We also played games, hiked, and simply soaked in uninterrupted family time. The sauna was a favorite for all of us, too—warming up while watching the waves roll in was next-level relaxation.
Tide Cabin isn’t just a place to stay—it’s an experience. It’s about slowing down, soaking up the views, and making memories together. I’m already looking forward to our next stay!
Things of Note
I am struggling to write this section of my review of Tide Cabin in Grand Marais. Usually, I can come up with something that wasn’t quite perfect, or at least not a good fit for us. But this time, I simply can’t. I even asked my husband and daughter to share their things of note, but we all came up empty.
I will note, however, that the properties are not pet-friendly. This doesn’t apply to us, but it could impact your decision.
5 Reasons Why Families Should Book Tide Cabin for Their North Shore Getaway

If you’re wondering where to stay in Grand Marais, Minnesota, you may be considering Timber and/or Tide Cabin—as well you should! My review of Tide Cabin would be remiss if I didn’t share some of my favorite reasons why you may want to book it for your next North Shore getaway with kids! Here are five reasons why I think families will love staying at Tide Cabin.
Proximity to Incredible Outdoor Adventures

If outdoor adventure is on your North Shore agenda, Tide Cabin puts you right where you want to be. To start, this cozy retreat sits along historic Croftville Road (aka the “walking road”), perfect for a scenic morning walk before heading out to explore. Beloved by locals and visitors alike, this 2-3 stretch boasts epic lake views, quaint cottages, and wildlife sightings (we saw so many birds and deer!).
Within minutes, you can also hit iconic trails like those found at Judge C.R. Magney State Park and Kadunce River Wayside Trail, both less than 15 minutes away. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls at Cascade River State Park, hiking to breathtaking overlooks at Oberg Mountain, or checking out the tallest waterfall in Minnesota at Grand Portage State Park, it’s all within a 45-minute drive. There are endless trails and activities to choose from—no matter your skills or interests.
In addition to hiking, you can also enjoy local kayaking and canoeing experiences (including guided tours), fishing on Lake Superior, e-biking, mountain biking, and more! Meanwhile, in winter, swap hiking boots for snowshoes or fat bikes—many nearby trails transform into winter playgrounds when the snow flies. Staying at Tide Cabin means Grand Marais’ best outdoor adventures are right at your doorstep (literally!), making it one of the top North Shore cabins for nature lovers.
Just Minutes from Downtown Grand Marais

One of the best things about Timber and Tide Cabins is its perfect location—just five minutes from downtown Grand Marais! Everything is within easy reach, whether grabbing morning coffee at Java Moose, browsing books at Drury Lane, or skipping rocks in the harbor.
We love strolling the Harbor Beach, and making our way to Artist’s Point and the Grand Marais Lighthouse for stunning views of Lake Superior. The lighthouse is one of my favorite spots on the North Shore for a sunset!
Charming local shops like Roam Whimsy Co. (the same fantastic owner as Timber & Tide Cabins!) and the Betsy Bowen Gallery are must-visits. Meanwhile, history buffs will enjoy the Cook County History Museum (summer season only). If you’re visiting on a summer weekend with kids, Drury Lane Books even has a lovely Summer Children’s Story Hour on Saturday mornings.
When hunger strikes, options abound—from fresh fish at The Fisherman’s Daughter to legendary tacos at Hungry Hippie. Head to Voyageur Brewing at sunset for a rooftop view and drinks or the Angry Trout for a lakeside dinner.

Panoramic views of Lake Superior (Including Sunrise + Sunset)

The panoramic views at Tide Cabin are truly unmatched. From sunrise to sunset, Lake Superior is always in sight. Start your morning with coffee on the beachfront, watching the sky explode with color as the waves roll in.
Then, thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room, you don’t even have to step outside to soak in the scenery. Each morning, when you wake up, Lady Superior is there to greet you as you walk out of the bedroom.

As you unwind in the barrel sauna, you can still watch the lake shimmer (or waves crash against the shore, depending on the day). Whether you’re lounging in the yard, walking the beach, or staying cozy inside, the views are always front and center. There’s just something magical about watching the light change over the water, making every moment at Tide Cabin feel special.
Sauna Sessions for Maximum Relaxation

The wood-burning sauna at Tide Cabin is the perfect way to unwind after a day of North Shore adventures. With space for six (ages 10+), it’s a cozy retreat that delivers both warmth and breathtaking views of Lake Superior.

Fire it up, give it 30-45 minutes to heat, and then settle in for pure relaxation. The crackling wood, the soothing steam, and the sight of the waves make it an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re warming up after a chilly winter hike or just looking for a moment of peace, this lakefront sauna is a must. Bonus points if you step outside for a refreshing cooldown between sessions!
The sauna is not shared between both cabins. It is only available with a booking at Tide Cabin (or both properties simultaneously).
Note: If you’ve never started a wood-burning sauna before, have no fear! The cabin has very helpful instructions about how to start and end a sauna session. Just review them inside Tide Cabin before you begin. This was our first time, too!
Family-friendly Amenities like PAC-MAN

Tide Cabin is packed with family-friendly amenities that make every moment memorable. Challenge your kids to a PAC-MAN tournament. Or, enjoy a board game while classic tunes spin on the record player. Several records are available in the cabin (or you can bring your own!). The cabin is even stocked with books and games for all ages.

In the morning, whip up a pancake breakfast in the well-equipped kitchen after stepping outside to catch an epic Lake Superior sunrise. Then, spend the day exploring Grand Marais and the surrounding area. Return for a sauna session or a peaceful walk along Croftville Road.

The lakefront beach is perfect for skipping rocks or dipping your toes in—just watch for those famous North Shore waves (they can get pretty big!). With plenty of space to play inside and out, plus books, games, and many cozy, relaxing spots, Tide Cabin makes it easy to unplug and enjoy quality time together. If you’re looking for a family-friendly North Shore cabin, this is it!
