Planning a Wisconsin family vacation and wondering where to go next? Port Washington is one of our favorite summer destinations for families in Wisconsin! This postcard-perfect town is where coastal charm, historic streets, and BIG Great Lakes personality meet on the sparkling shores of Lake Michigan. Add in tons of kid-friendly activities, and you've got yourself one of the best family trips in the Midwest!
Spend your days exploring the marina, enjoying great local restaurants, and catching unforgettable sunrises over the lake. In the summer, Lake Michigan is surprisingly warm. It's even warm enough for a bit of swimming, making Port Washington an excellent Wisconsin destination for splashing and sandcastle building. Plus, downtown Port Washington is very compact. In fact, if you stay at our recommended hotel (don't worry, it's one of the best hotels in Port Washington for families!), most activities on this itinerary are just steps away. Whether you're looking for things to do in Port Washington with kids or want a low-key getaway filled with simple joys, this 3-day Port Washington itinerary for families has you covered.
Tips + Packing List for Port Washington with Kids

If you are planning a weekend itinerary for Port Washington, Wisconsin, with kids, there are a few things to know first. From the best time to visit Port Washington to a few packing tips, remember these things while planning your upcoming family trip to Wisconsin!
A Few Tips

Here are a few of my tips for visiting Port Washington with kids:
- Summer is generally considered the best time to visit Port Washington with kids. All of the seasonal attractions are open. And, it's a great time to swim in Lake Michigan! The shoulder seasons (like May and September) are also lovely. And, of course, fall is also beautiful in Port Washington!
- If you're traveling from Minneapolis (like we did), Port Washington is about a 5.5-hour drive. Port Washington is also about 30 minutes from Milwaukee. And, less than about 2-3 hours from Chicago. The closest airport and train station are in Milwaukee.
- Stay downtown so you can walk to most attractions, restaurants, and the marina without worrying about parking.
- Check the event calendar for festivals, concerts, or farmers’ markets that often pop up in summer.
- See an account of our highlights and favorite family activities in Port Washington, Wisconsin, on Instagram here!
Packing Tips for Port Washington with Kids

In addition to the things you usually pack for a vacation with kids, don't forget these things for traveling to Port Washington with kids:
- Pack for the lake! Don't forget to bring swimsuits, towels, water shoes, and sand toys. Hot summer days are best spent in the sand and surf along Lake Michigan.
- Bring some layers! Even in summer, lake breezes can make mornings and evenings cool or, at least, more mild.
- Hiking gear is great to have if you plan to go to one or more of the nearby state parks.

Arrive + Check Into The Harborview on Lake Michigan, Ascend Hotel Collection

After you arrive, check into The Harborview on Lake Michigan, an Ascend Hotel Collection property (use this link for 10% off your booking, valid for any reservation until Dec 31, 2025). I promise, you'll immediately love how close it is to everything in downtown Port Washington.

Our room on the 5th floor was spacious, comfortable, and perfect for our small family. We even had views of downtown and the marina, which were spectacular! Plus, the bathroom door had the cutest porthole detail, which made my daughter giggle. Watching the boats go in and out of the marina while sipping my morning coffee felt like the perfect start to our Wisconsin family vacation.

But what we loved most were the amenities that make traveling with kids even easier! The pool and hot tub were instant hits. In the mornings, breakfast was made-to-order and delicious in the on-site restaurant (The Beacon Restaurant & Bar). There are options for every taste, from hearty plates to lighter bites. Hotel guests also receive a pretty sizable discount on breakfast.
The staff is also very warm and welcoming, always ready with a smile or a local recommendation for things to do in Port Washington with kids. Finally, the onsite parking meant we could come and go without stress-though we hardly needed the car since everything downtown was walkable. Staying right on the marina made it feel like the lake was part of our backyard. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat!

Dinner at Inventors Brewpub

Wondering where to eat in Port Washington on your first night? Begin your visit on a low-key note by heading to Inventors Brewpub. The casual atmosphere makes it easy to relax after a day of driving. And the full menu means everyone in the family can find something they love. I appreciated the thoughtful kids' menu, which kept my daughter happy while I enjoyed a local craft beer.
We grabbed a table with marina views, watching the boats come and go (as the sun set over downtown-so pretty!). There's plenty of indoor seating (and some limited outdoor tables for those perfect summer evenings). It felt like the ideal spot to unwind, enjoy a family meal, and soak in the lakeside charm that makes Port Washington so special.

Enjoy Breakfast + Coffee at Java Dock Café

Start your morning at Java Dock Café, one of the best places for coffee in Port Washington (and a true local favorite!). Just a short walk from the hotel, this family-owned spot serves handcrafted coffee drinks made from locally roasted beans alongside fresh, delicious breakfast options (all made with real, local ingredients where possible).
I recommend the Breakfast Burrito or the Avocado Toast. I hear the Sunrise Bagel Sammy is a hit, too! The cozy, community-focused vibe made it the perfect place to fuel up and get ready for a day of exploring Port Washington.
Explore Downtown Port Washington, Rotary Park, + the Marina

Spend your morning embracing the Port Washington experience by exploring downtown, Rotary Park, and the marina.
Start with a stroll along the Harbor Walk, a beautiful 3-mile path that takes you from South Beach to North Beach. The route passes through parks, gardens, and the bustling marina. Part of the path also passes behind the hotel, so it's easy to hop on and off throughout your visit!

Stop at Rotary Park. Set along the Marina, you can watch fishing boats bring in their catch and enjoy stunning views from the breakwall (and pierhead lighthouse when it reopens after restoration). Kids will love spotting fish jumping out of the water and several types of birds flying overhead. Rotary Park also has a beautiful gazebo that's perfect for family pictures! Head into the Marina to see the catch of the day. It's a great spot to chat with fishermen, or book a charter (if you haven't already).

Downtown offers plenty to discover, too! Wander Franklin Street's charming shops where you'll find outdoor gear, pottery, gifts, and jewelry. Don't miss my personal favorite, Pear & Simple. Then, don't miss The Purple Turtle Artisan Collective for unique artisan finds, or Port’s Cozy Corner. Keep an eye out for colorful murals scattered around town. Of course, you have to reward your crew with a sweet treat at Frankie's Ice Cream. Or, head to the The Chocolate Chisel for yummy chocolates or ice cream. This mix of outdoor fun, local flavor, and lakeside charm makes for a perfect way to start your family visit to Port Washington.
Play Together at the Possibility Playground (Upper Lake Park)

Just a short 16-minute walk from downtown, the Possibility Playground (in Upper Lake Park) is a must-visit spot for things to do in Port Washington with toddlers and young kids. This massive, colorful playground is designed to be universally accessible (making it fun and welcoming for children of all abilities). With a fenced-in tot area, padded flooring, swings, slides, and boardwalk sections, there's plenty to explore and enjoy.
The playground also features water fountains, bathrooms, benches within the fenced play area, and ample parking nearby. A smaller playground is close by, too. The sidewalk from downtown makes getting here easy and safe for families who prefer to walk.
Grab Lunch at Big Baby Subs

For a tasty midday meal, head to Big Baby Subs (one of the best restaurants in Port Washington for lunch!). Conveniently located right downtown at the back of The Steerage, this local hole-in-the-wall is known for its friendly staff and great sandwiches.
Order easily at the kiosk just inside the door. Then, choose to eat indoors or grab your sandwich to enjoy on a nearby picnic bench. With a fair-sized menu full of delicious options, Big Baby Subs is the perfect casual stop to refuel before your next adventure in Port Washington with kids.
Take a Hike at Lion’s Den Nature Preserve

Just a quick 10-minute drive from downtown, Lion's Den Nature Preserve is a fantastic spot for outdoor things to do in Port Washington with kids. This nature preserve features several hiking trails, including boardwalk paths that wind through prairie and marshland. Plus, a floating boardwalk that lets you get up close to the wetlands.
The preserve also showcases one of the last stretches of undeveloped bluff land along Lake Michigan. In fact, there are towering 90- to 100-foot cliffs offering breathtaking views over the water! Lion’s Den Trail is the most direct way to the beach. Along the trail, walk across scenic bridges or take the stairways down to the shoreline.

We opted to do the scenic Waterfowl Walk and part of the Lion's Den Trail, with a pit stop at the Boardwalk Viewing Area. It was a beautiful walk! We loved the boardwalk trails and marsh views.
With picnic areas and (seasonal) restrooms, Lion's Den Nature Preserve is a fantastic place to explore nature just outside of town.
Dinner at the Beacon Restaurant

For a memorable lakeside dinner, end your first day at The Beacon Restaurant. It's one of the best restaurants on the water in Port Washington. With stunning views of the iconic lighthouse, marina, and Lake Michigan, it's the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. If you can, snag an outdoor table for incredible waterfront views!
The family-friendly menu offers something for everyone, featuring locally sourced steak and fish, as well as farm-fresh salads and made-from-scratch desserts. Don't miss the cheesecurds-I promise, you won't regret it! While there is no dedicated kids' menu, there are plenty of kid-friendly options (burgers, chicken sandwiches, pretzels, etc.).
Day 2 in Port Washington with Kids
Ready for day two? Let's explore even more outdoor adventures and family-friendly fun around Port Washington. I'm confident each stop will keep your kids smiling, laughing, and exploring all day long!
Have Breakfast at the Beacon Restaurant

Start your day at The Beacon Restaurant, a top choice for where to eat breakfast in Port Washington with kids. My daughter devoured the avocado toast, while I appreciated the variety of options. You'll find everything from hearty plates to lighter bites-perfect for every appetite.
The bright, airy dining room offers lovely water views that make morning meals even more enjoyable. Plus, if you're staying at The Harborview, hotel guests receive a generous discount each morning. It's a delicious and family-friendly way to fuel up before a day of exploring!
Spend the Morning Splashing in the Water at South Beach Park

This was one of our favorite experiences in Port Washington! So, I hope you give it a try, too.
Spend a refreshing morning at South Beach Park. I truly think it's one of the best summer things to do in Port Washington with kids. Just a 10-minute walk from downtown, this sandy beach offers a long stretch of (clean) shoreline. There are even a few shady spots to relax and set up your towels/chairs. And, of course, plenty of room for splashing, swimming, and exploring tiny shells along the shore. If you want a shady spot near the water, I recommend bringing a beach tent for added shade. Everything near the water is full sun.
The water is cool but comfortable on warm summer days, perfect for little swimmers and paddlers alike. With portable toilets nearby, a small parking lot, and a beach toy library close to the parking area, it's an easy and convenient spot for families with kids of all ages. For early risers, it's a fantastic place to catch a breathtaking Lake Michigan sunrise before your day of adventure begins. If you're looking for a Wisconsin family vacation with a beach, you'll love this spot in Port Washington!
Enjoy Lunch on the Marina at Dockside Deli

After your swim, enjoy a relaxed lunch right on the water (but, back in town) at Dockside Deli. With both indoor and outdoor seating (shade or full sun), you can soak in beautiful marina views while enjoying a tasty meal.
Open daily for breakfast and lunch, Dockside Deli serves up fresh, made-from-scratch dishes that will keep everyone satisfied. The menu features handhelds, burgers, and fresh salads. Plus, a kid-friendly menu to keep little appetites happy. Afterward, don't forget to treat the family to some delicious ice cream for dessert! They have a case full of yummy options.
Explore Harrington Beach State Park

Next on this Port Washington itinerary for families, take a short 12-minute drive to Harrington Beach State Park. This stunning spot offers something for everyone, from hiking and biking to beach-going. Remember to bring your Wisconsin state park pass (or buy one on-site) to enjoy this natural local gem.
I recommend parking near the Ansay Welcome Center. There is even a great playground just off the parking lot. It's perfect for kids to burn off some energy before or after hitting the trails or the beach. From the parking lot, you have a few different options for your afternoon adventure.

The park boasts over a mile of some of the cleanest, most beautiful beaches in the Midwest. We were stunned! I wish we had brought our swimsuits (so make sure you do!). While there are no facilities directly on the beach, the endless views of Lake Michigan more than make up for it. You can reach the beach with a short walk from the parking lot.
We popped onto the beach for a quick look after hiking. My daughter even dipped her toes in the water! Instead of lots of beach time on this trip, we hiked the Quarry Lake Trail. It's a quick trail with absolutely gorgeous views of Quarry Lake. You can make the hike longer by using the interconnected trails, but we just took the quick loop around the lake.
End Your Day with Dinner at Twisted Willow Restaurant

End your day with a memorable dinner at Twisted Willow Restaurant, one of the best restaurants in Port Washington. This was the best meal of our visit!
Nestled in the heart of downtown, this elegant former home offers elevated American fare crafted from farm-fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The beautiful interior and cozy patio set the perfect scene for a relaxing family meal.
Don't miss the brown butter scallops (they are divine!). And, be sure to save room for the lemon cheesecake. We might have called it "absolutely life-changing". With a menu full of scratch-made appetizers, soups, sandwiches, and entrees, Twisted Willow promises a casual yet eclectic dining experience you won't forget.
Reservations are recommended!
Day 3 in Port Washington with Kids
It's your last day to soak up all the family fun Port Washington has to offer. And, if you're anything like us, you're completely smitten by day three! Our itinerary takes you through a delicious lunch. But, if you're looking to stretch the adventures into a full day, I've included extra ideas below to keep the fun going and going!
Start your day with another delicious breakfast at The Beacon Restaurant, a reliable favorite for families visiting Port Washington. It's the perfect spot to fuel up before checking out of the hotel. Then, get ready for more family adventures around town.
Take a Walk Along the Water at Coal Dock Park

After breakfast (and checking out of the hotel), take a leisurely walk along the water to Coal Dock Park. You can use the scenic Harbor Walk to get there.
This beautiful park in Port Washington offers shaded benches, a grassy area, and a charming gazebo. It's the perfect spot to pause and enjoy the lakeside breeze before heading out of town. Kids can easily run around the green space to burn off any extra energy before the car ride home.
Known as a favorite local fishing spot, the park also features informational plaques and beautifully maintained gardens. With its promenade and pedestrian bridge, Coal Dock Park also connects you to Lake Michigan, the South Dock bird sanctuary, and South Beach.
Tour the Port Washington Light Station

For a memorable last stop on your Port Washington itinerary for families, tour the historic Port Washington Light Station. It's just a 15-minute walk from downtown (be ready for a steep set of stairs on the way up to the lighthouse).
While Port Washington's iconic Art Deco lighthouse (at the harbor breakwater) isn't open for tours, this one is! It's a shore light house (as opposed to a harbor lighthouse) and has been beautifully restored.
This 1860 lighthouse offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of a 19th-century lightkeeper. In the museum, you'll see living quarters carefully recreated to illustrate what life was like in the past. The site also features several maritime artifacts and local memorabilia, all of which are maintained by dedicated volunteers.
Everyone (ages 6+) can climb the lighthouse tower to take in spectacular views of Lake Michigan. On a clear day, you can even see Milwaukee across the water! Remember to wear sturdy shoes (no flip-flops!) for the climb.
End Your Visit with Lunch at The Steerage Dining Saloon

End your visit (at least with this itinerary) with lunch at The Steerage Dining Saloon. Located right downtown, it's one of the best restaurants in Port Washington for families. This eatery captures a fun, old-ship vibe that kids and adults alike will love.
The menu features casual comfort food, including hot sandwiches, hearty soups, and heritage entrees, along with a full bar. I highly recommend the Reuben! With a dedicated kids' menu and a lively atmosphere, The Steerage serves up authentic, delicious food without any fuss (perfect for wrapping up your family adventure in Port Washington!).
