After years of taste-testing across the metro, these are my top picks for kid-friendly rooftops and patios in Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and across the Twin Cities area.

Broders’ Pasta Bar

Two dishes of pasta from Broders' Pasta Bar, served on the patio at one of the best outdoor dining spots in Minneapolis with kids.

Broders’ Pasta Bar in South Minneapolis is a go-to for Italian comfort food served al fresco. In fact, it’s my favorite restaurant in Minneapolis! The intimate patio has a cover, lush greenery, and a relaxed vibe perfect for families. Their kids’ menu is simple but satisfying, with pasta options that little ones will love. Adults can indulge in seasonal pastas, a divine burrata salad, and wines by the glass or bottle. It’s one of the best summer patios in Minneapolis with kids because it manages to feel both special and low-key for everyone in your crew. We always leave happy and full.

Coastal Seafoods

At Coastal Seafoods, summer is all about the outdoor bites and casual patio. Their lobster roll is a must, and the crispy fish tacos are a close second. I mean, is there anything better than lobster rolls in the summer sun? It’s a great spot for adventurous eaters—even picky kiddos can usually be tempted by fries, fish, or fried shrimp. There’s no dedicated kids’ menu, but the relaxed setting and fast, counter-style ordering make this an ideal Twin Cities patio for families looking for a quick lunch.

Hola Arepa

An vibrant arepa from Hola Arepa, one of the best outdoor dining spots in Minneapolis with kids.

Hola Arepa’s patio is a colorful oasis in the middle of Minneapolis, offering fun cocktails and a tropical vibe. The tropical murals, string lights, and upbeat energy make it an awesome stop for families looking for Twin Cities summer dining spots with kids. My daughter loves the sweet plantains, arepas, and fresh juices (so, I know your kiddos will adore the kids’ menu here, too!). While kids enjoy their dedicated menu and the outdoor swings (use with oversight), grown-ups can sip a tamarind margarita or frozen slushie. The lively patio and fast service make it a winner for outdoor dining in Minneapolis with kids.

Sea Salt Eatery

Sea Salt Eatery is one of my favorite summer spots for outdoor dining with kids in Minneapolis. It’s so good, I’ve managed to forget to let the camera eat first—so you’ll just have to imagine this one! Tucked inside Minnehaha Regional Park, it serves fresh seafood—think fish tacos, po’boys, and calamari—on a sunny, picnic-style patio just steps from the falls (there is usually at least one shady spot). There’s no kids’ menu, but we’ve never had trouble finding something delicious to share. After eating, you can explore the trails or watch the cascading urban waterfall. Expect this counter-service spot to be busy on lovely summer days. Plan ahead or come early. It’s casual, fun, and full of summer magic. It is undoubtedly one of the best Twin Cities summer dining spots with kids.

St. Genevieve

A delicious gnocchi dish from St. Genevieve.

Bonjour, St. Genevieve! This Linden Hills eatery is a dreamy spot for its charming patio and divine French flavors. Their shaded patio feels like a secret garden, with large potted flowers blooming and pesky street views. There isn’t a kids’ menu, but the small plates and burgers will appeal to most kids. My daughter usually goes for the steak frites (or sometimes, just the frites and dessert—kids, what can I say!). I love the oysters and seasonal menu options. Families seeking enchanting patios in Minneapolis will absolutely adore this local gem.

The Tasting Room

Charcuterie from The Tasting Room.

The Tasting Room might sound like a grown-up spot, but it’s surprisingly family-friendly, especially on the sunny patio. Though if your kids are easily fussy at the table, it may be one to skip and wait until they are older. The menu includes kid-friendly bites (think charcuterie, flatbreads, and sweets). I love it for a fancy summer happy hour or early dinner, where the adults can enjoy a glass of wine. And, the kids can nibble and color along, while everyone enjoys the beautiful weather. It’s one of those Twin Cities summer dining spots with kids that feels like a vacation (even if it’s just for your taste buds!).

Victor’s 1959 Café

A delicious dish from Victor's 1959 Café, served on the patio, one of the best outdoor dining spots in Minneapolis with kids.

Victor’s 1959 Café is a Twin Cities classic, with a tiny but colorful patio and a huge heart. Cuban comfort food, like ropa vieja and sweet plantains, are a favorite for all ages. The vibe is super casual and welcoming, with hand-painted walls and friendly service. My daughter devours the mango pancakes, while I love the Eggs Havana. If you’re looking for where to eat outside in Minneapolis with a side of culture, this is the place!

Pat’s Tap

Pat’s Tap is loud, lively, and fun—just what families need for a laid-back night out together. It’s an excellent spot for kids who like to move and parents who love a great pour alongside some pub grub. Their patio is spacious, and the menu includes burgers, fries, mac & cheese, and fried cheese curds that please every age. Plus, little ones have their own dedicated kids’ menu. There’s even skee-ball inside! Talk about a fun joint for all ages. If you want an easy outdoor dining option in Minneapolis with kids that doesn’t sacrifice flavor, this is it!

Owamni

An Indigenous dish served at Owamni, one of the best outdoor dining spots in Minneapolis with kids.

Owamni by Sean Sherman (aka The Sioux Chef) is one of the most meaningful and delicious dining experiences in the Twin Cities. Their riverside patio is gorgeous, and the Indigenous menu is just as exciting. While there’s no dedicated kids’ menu, the staff is incredible about helping families navigate the options. The menu changes seasonally, meaning there is always something new to try. This is a must-visit for families wanting to explore Twin Cities’ rooftop dining in a truly special way.

Hen House Eatery

A massive cinnamon roll from Hen House Eatery.

Your next family brunch just got better! Located in downtown Minneapolis, Hen House Eatery has a great patio with a relaxed feel. The kids’ menu is full of winners, and the massive (seasonal) cinnamon rolls are legendary. It’s walkable to many downtown attractions, fun, and totally family-friendly. If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to get the chilaquiles. They are a true delight! It definitely belongs on your list of Twin Cities summer dining spots for kids.

Best Restaurants with Rooftops + Patios in Saint Paul for Families with Kids

Saint Paul also offers a delightful array of rooftop and patio dining options! Each of my top picks is perfect for families looking to enjoy the summer weather. In fact, I’ve got you covered, from historic neighborhoods to scenic riverfronts! As you probably know, Saint Paul boasts plenty of places to savor delicious meals in a welcoming outdoor setting. These are three of my favorites! Saint Paul’s patios undoubtedly provide the ideal backdrop for memorable family outings.

Meritage

A delicious steak dish from Meritage, one of the best outdoor dining spots near Minneapolis with kids.

Looking for an enchanting, French-inspired patio with a menu to match? Meritage brings Parisian vibes to downtown Saint Paul. Their umbrella-lined patio is beautiful in the summer, and the menu balances elegance with kid-pleasing options like pommes frites and (often) seasonal crepes. We love coming here for brunch or a leisurely dinner. While there is no dedicated kids’ menu, kind servers are happy to assist tiny foodies in finding an option that’s sure to please. It’s definitely one of the best summer patios in the Twin Cities with kids who enjoy trying new things in a picturesque downtown setting. Meritage is also minutes from Rice Park, so you can say hi to Charlie Brown before or after dinner!

Holman’s Table

A delicious elk dish on the patio at Holman's Table.

Holman’s Table is located at the St. Paul Downtown Airport, and yes—you can watch planes while you eat! The patio is surprisingly chic, and the menu is refined but approachable. My daughter is mesmerized by the runway views. Last time, we saw five or six plane landings and takeoffs! This place nails the balance of upscale food and family-friendly excitement. Plus, they even have a kids’ menu for little travel-loving foodies. Holman’s Table is a top pick for Saint Paul patio restaurants for families who love adventure, with great food and plane watching.

Due Focacceria

Fresh focaccia on the patio at Due Focacceria, one of the best outdoor dining spots near Minneapolis with kids.

Due Focacceria, located in St. Paul’s Mac-Groveland neighborhood, is a delightful spot for family-friendly outdoor dining with kids. This Italian-inspired eatery offers a casual atmosphere with a charming patio. The menu features a variety of focaccia sandwiches, soups, and salads, catering to diverse tastes. While there isn’t a dedicated kids’ menu, the offerings are approachable for younger diners. The self-service ordering system adds a modern touch, and the staff is available to assist as needed. Due Focacceria’s welcoming environment and delicious fare make it a family favorite among kid-friendly patios in the Twin Cities.

Bear Cave Brewing, Hopkins

Several dishes and pints on the rooftop of Bear Cave Brewing, one of the best outdoor dining spots near Minneapolis with kids.

Bear Cave Brewing (Hopkins) is a standout among our favorite Twin Cities summer dining spots with kids. Its spacious rooftop deck and dog-friendly patio provide a relaxed setting for families. With 50+ self-pour taps offering beer, cider, and wine, adults can enjoy a variety of beverages. The innovative self-service system allows guests to explore at their own pace, making it a convenient choice for families. Then, the menu features stone-fired Neapolitan pizzas and shareable appetizers that appeal to all ages. It’s one of my favorite pizzas in Minnesota! Bear Cave Brewing’s welcoming atmosphere and scratch-made pizza are just a few of the many reasons it’s a top pick on my list of Twin Cities rooftops for families.

A massive double burger from My Burger in Edina.

Craving a juicy burger and malt? Then, My Burger is what you need! A local chain in the Twin Cities, locations in Richfield, Wayzata, and Edina all have lovely patios (among others). Their patios are casual and shaded, and the vibe is fast and friendly. With a dedicated kids’ menu, plus classic options like grilled cheese, nuggets, and hand-cut fries, this is an easy win for families on the go. Don’t miss checking out their Burger of the Month! It’s one of our go-to family-friendly patios in the Twin Cities suburbs.

Punch Pizza, Locations Across the Metro

Two pizzas from Punch Pizza on the patio, one of the best outdoor dining spots near Minneapolis with kids.

Punch Pizza is a family favorite for dining al fresco in the Twin Cities. With multiple locations offering patios, such as the Northeast Minneapolis, Eagan, and Lake Street spots, it’s easy to enjoy their authentic Neapolitan pizzas al fresco. Their wood-fired pies are a hit with both kids and adults alike. While there’s no formal kids’ menu, the Bambini pizza—featuring crushed tomato and mozzarella—is a perfect size for younger diners. My daughter loves watching the pizzas being assembled right before her eyes! The quick service and relaxed atmosphere are ideal for families seeking outdoor dining in Minneapolis and beyond with kids. Without question, Punch Pizza’s patios offer a delightful summer dining experience.

Charcuterie from The Vine Room.

Nestled in downtown Hopkins, The Vine Room is beloved for its wine flights and charcuterie. While there is plenty of seating inside, the darling little patio is a welcome change in sunny weather. They also offer games for all ages to use while you dine, alongside a surprisingly kid-welcoming menu of toasts, spreads, and fruit plates. It’s a great spot to relax and unwind after a walk or a park stop in Hopkins.

Patrick’s Bakery & Cafe, Richfield

A seasonal pastry on the patio from Patrick's Bakery & Cafe.

Patrick’s (Richfield) has one of the most charming patios for a casual meal with kids (from breakfast to dinner!). It’s one of my favorite hidden gems for foodies in the Twin Cities! For breakfast, the French-inspired pastries and crepes are hits every time. You simply won’t believe the line of bakery options! The Almond Pear Danish is a personal favorite. Dinner is equally impressive, serving French favorites like Steak Frites, Beef Bourguignon, and Duck a l’orange. In addition to a dedicated kids’ menu, kids 12 and under eat free on Tuesdays (5:30 pm to close) with the purchase of any adult entrée. No matter when you go, Patrick’s is laid-back, beautiful, and ideal for a slow summer morning (or dinner!).

Prefer to eat amongst the flowers? Try the seasonal location at Bachman’s (on Lyndale Avenue in Minneapolis). It’s another excellent option for outdoor dining in Minneapolis with kids!

Rudy’s Redeye Grill, White Bear Lake

Duck Wantons on the rooftop at Rudy’s Redeye Grill.

Just minutes from downtown White Bear Lake (10 minutes by foot, or just a few by car), Rudy’s has a rooftop patio that will truly impress! It is undoubtedly a standout option in the northeast suburbs. The menu is classic American with a great kids’ menu. I highly recommend the duck wantons! And, the sweet potato hashbrowns are an excellent choice if you need to choose a side. They might just be the best sweet potatoes I’ve ever had! If you drink, the Ruditini pairs perfectly with a hot summer day! The staff is incredibly welcoming, and the rooftop vibe is perfect for a warm summer evening with your family.

Acqua Restaurant & Bar, White Bear Lake

The seafood platter at Acqua Restaurant & Bar in White Bear Lake.

Acqua Restaurant & Bar is one of the most picturesque deck and patio dining spots near the water in the Twin Cities. It’s a bit more upscale and spendy, but still accommodating to families who love great food and a leisurely dinner together. They even have a small kids’ menu for little foodies. The view of White Bear Lake is unbeatable, and the pasta and seafood shine. I highly recommend getting the Seafood Feast! This is an excellent choice for a special occasion meal with kids in tow. Don’t skip on dessert. The Butterscotch Budino is out of this world! Afterward, take a walk along the waterfront and check out the fishing pier for great views of the lake.
