A Few Tips for Visiting Grand Rapids, Michigan, with Kids

Here are a few of my tips for visiting Grand Rapids, Michigan, with kids:

  • What's the best time to visit Grand Rapids with kids? Well, that depends on what you want to do! Summer is generally considered the best time to visit, but we loved our fall visit.
  • Check for direct flights from your home airport. We flew directly from Minneapolis (about 90 minutes). The Grand Rapids airport is small and easy to navigate with little ones.
  • Rent a car (unless you did a road trip!). Grand Rapids is spread out, and you'll want flexibility to explore its unique neighborhoods, activities, and trails.

Day 1 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with Kids with Kids

We arrived in Grand Rapids on a Thursday evening, checked into our hotel, and walked along the river to dinner. If this is your arrival plan too, this is an easy and relaxed way to start any fall weekend in Grand Rapids, exploring all the fun things to do with kids.

Arrive + Get Settled: Where to Stay in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with Kids

A man enjoys a view of the Grand River from JW Marriott Downtown.

When planning our family weekend itinerary in Grand Rapids with kids, we decided to experience two of the city’s top family hotels: the JW Marriott Downtown and the Amway Grand Plaza

Conveniently located across the street from each other in the heart of downtown, both offer comfort, style, and easy access to the city's top attractions. Both hotels also offer pools, on-site dining, and other kid-friendly amenities. While each had its perks, we slightly preferred the JW Marriott Downtown for its upscale comfort, river views, and warm, family-friendly vibe.

A comfortable hotel room in the JW Marriott Downtown.

At the JW Marriott Downtown, we checked in, admired our view of the Grand River, and immediately felt relaxed. The location made it easy to walk to restaurants and attractions. And, of course, the hotel's pool, hot tub, and on-site restaurant, Margaux, made unwinding effortless after a travel day. The staff at the hotel and restaurant were also incredibly generous with their time and recommendations.

Then, the Amway Grand Plaza offers more of an old-world charm with several storefronts and eateries on the first floor. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The staff was welcoming, and we loved the on-site amenities. Here, you have access to a pool, hot tub, and Celeste Salon & Spa. Plus, MDRD on the 27th floor offers panoramic views of downtown Grand Rapids while you sip seasonal cocktails and enjoy inventive desserts.

You really can't go wrong with either hotel!

Walk to Dinner on the Westside

A man and his young daughter walk along the river in Ah-Nab-Awen Park.

Once we got settled, we took a short 10-15 minute stroll along the river, through Ah-Nab-Awen Park, to Grand Rapids' Westside. This is a trendy, up-and-coming neighborhood filled with lively eateries and bars. The walk itself was lovely! Along the way, keep an eye out for fly fishermen casting lines in the Grand River as you go (this was such a highlight for us!).

A steak dinner at Butcher’s Union.

We chose Butcher's Union for dinner. This bustling spot is known for its locally sourced meats, perfectly cooked steaks, and impressive whiskey list. The atmosphere is vibrant-dark, noisy, and full of energy-with both indoor and outdoor seating options. The menu is designed for sharing, making it a great fit for families with adventurous eaters. I forgot to ask if they have a kids' menu, as my daughter ordered a pasta off the regular menu. She even had the best dish of the evening!

A posh desert from Margaux in Grand Rapids.

If you'd rather stay close to the hotel (or if you arrive late and don't want to venture far), Margaux at the JW Marriott is a superb choice. With a kids' menu, classic French fare, and a calm, elegant dining room, it's perfect for a relaxed first-night meal. We popped in after dinner for a nightcap and dessert. It was a fantastic way to end our first night in Grand Rapids!

Day 2 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with Kids

After a cozy first night downtown, let's get ready for the first full day of exploring all the fun things to do in Grand Rapids with kids. Day 2 of our weekend itinerary in Grand Rapids was packed with classic fall fun-think colorful leaves, local markets, and outdoor art. This was the day that truly showed us why Grand Rapids shines in the fall (and hopefully it will for you, too!).

Grab Coffee from Stovetop Coffee Roasters

A hand holds out a to-go coffee from Stovetop Coffee Roasters.

Start the morning with a caffeine boost from Stovetop Coffee Roasters. It's a must-stop for coffee lovers on any family weekend itinerary in Grand Rapids with kids (parents need fuel, too!).

This charming spot sits on a beautiful tree-lined block that GLOWS with golden leaves in the fall. It's worth a visit for the atmosphere alone. Inside, you'll find a small but tempting selection of pastries and some of the most creative seasonal drinks around. My favorite? The Auntie Whispers. A cozy fall drink with a hint of sarsaparilla. YUM! Trust me, you'll want to grab one to go to enjoy while you browse along at your next stop (a local farmers’ market).

Visit the Fulton Street Farmers Market

A table filled with seasonal produce from Fulton Street Farmers Market, one of the best things to do in Grand Rapids with kids.

Next up on our family weekend itinerary in Grand Rapids with kids is one of the city's most beloved (and free) attractions-the Fulton Street Farmers Market. Established in 1922, this year-round market has been connecting farmers, makers, visitors, and the community for over a century. It's a lively, colorful stop that's fun for all ages. We LOVE a local farmers' market. And this one is a new favorite for us.

Under the covered market, you'll find everything from bird feeders and pumpkins to handmade jewelry, stained glass, and crochet creations. At least, this is what we saw during our fall visit. Each season offers a diverse selection of produce and wares.

A hand holds out a sandwich from Semifreddo at the Fulton Street Farmers Market.

Throughout the year, local vendors sell fresh produce, spices, and even succulents. Don't miss the food trucks for a delicious, made-to-order lunch. We grabbed a delightful French-inspired sandwich from Semifreddo

Kids will love exploring the stalls filled with fidget boards, games, and treats while you enjoy the friendly, hometown vibe. It's the perfect way to spend a fall morning in Grand Rapids before heading to your next adventure.

Explore The Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

A man walks by a large outdoor sculpture at the The Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park .

No weekend itinerary in Grand Rapids with kids is complete without a visit to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. It's one of the city's crown jewels! As one of the best things to do in Grand Rapids with kids, this enormous, world-class experience includes stunning gardens with over 200 captivating sculptures.

While most of the Lena Meijer Children's Garden is currently under renovation, a small (but mighty!) play area is still available for kids to run about. Plus, the rest of the park is vast and beautifully designed. Indoor and outdoor gardens offer hours of exploration, from a huge koi pond to a fascinating carnivorous plant garden. The carnivorous plant garden was a personal favorite!

A gazebo in the Japanese Garden at The Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

Each garden feels expansive and immersive, with sculptures thoughtfully placed throughout. I don't even think we saw all the sculptures; there were so many. While exploring the outdoor gardens, you can't miss the Japanese garden! It's one of the largest and best ones I've ever been to in the United States. It is simply lovely!

Don't miss the café and gift shop for a quick snack or souvenir.

Lunch + Visit Robinette's Apple Haus & Winery

Antonia and her young daughter sit in massive chairs with the orchards behind them at Robinette’s Apple Haus & Winery.

For a perfect fall-foward stop on your weekend itinerary in Grand Rapids with kids, head to Robinette's Apple Haus & Winery (it's been a West Michigan favorite since 1911!). This place is way more than just an orchard.

The Apple Haus has it all! There's a bakery with fresh treats, a cozy dining area for lunch (watch the hours), and a farm store. In the farm store, you can browse and shop for apples, jams, popcorn, caramel apples, and seasonal goodies. There's even a second store dedicated to fall decor and apple-themed accessories.

Inside the autumn market at Robinette’s Apple Haus & Winery.

Robinette's offers a full day of fall fun for families, from hayrides and corn mazes to cider and donuts. Of course, kids will love the jumping pillow and play area, making it easy to enjoy a relaxed lunch while they burn off energy. Adults can also indulge in a wine tasting at the winery. They offer house-made wines and hard ciders (just keep in mind this area is 21+). Robinette's is a classic fall spot to soak up the season and all of its flavors.

Alternative Lunch Idea: Two Beards Deli

Soup and a sandwich from Two Beards Deli.

If you miss the lunch window at Robinette's, don't worry-we did too! On the way back to the hotel, grab a late lunch at Two Beards Deli. It's one of the best restaurants for lunch in Grand Rapids with kids! The menu is MASSIVE. They truly have something for everyone, including hearty sandwiches, soups, and classic deli favorites. They also have vegetarian and vegan options a plenty.

Kids (and adults) will love the playful, nerdy interior, complete with fun action figures and quirky pictures lining the walls. It's a relaxed, casual spot where you can grab a bite with your kids.

After lunch, we headed back to the hotel for a bit of downtime. This is an excellent time to check out the hotel pool or take a nap.

Dinner at GR Downtown Market

A man checks out a vendor stall at GR Downtown Market.

End the day at Grand Rapids Downtown Market. This food hall is one of the best places for dinner in Grand Rapids with kids. The market boasts a vibrant, bustling atmosphere with a genuine "real market" feel. It reminded me a lot of Philly's Reading Market (but brighter and smaller). And, it's a food lover's dream. Grand Rapids Downtown Market features 19 indoor food merchants, year-round events, and ample dining space all under one roof.

A glass of wine and sushi found at GR Downtown Market.

We grabbed Indian food from Curry Leaf and sushi from Sushi Market, then settled at Sav Sav by Squibb, where you can enjoy wine if you're 21+. Though, the whole family can sit here and bring in food from other vendors.

I love food halls because everyone can get exactly what they want. Grand Rapids Downtown Market is easy to please picky eaters and adventurous eaters alike. It's casual, lively, and a great way to end a full day of fall fun in Grand Rapids with kids.

Day 3 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with Kids

Today's agenda mixes indoor and outdoor fun, giving your family a little of everything as you explore more fun things to do in Grand Rapids with kids.

Enjoy Breakfast at Morning Belle

A brunch spread from Morning Belle.

We kicked off the morning with a reservation at Morning Belle, easily one of the best brunch spots in Grand Rapids for families. The bright, cheery space sets the perfect tone for a relaxing morning. And, the menu is HUGE-Benedicts, pancakes, omelets, hash, and even giant cinnamon rolls. The kids' menu is just as fun (complete with sprinkles on pancakes!).

At Morning Belle, everything is made to order with fresh, farm-to-table ingredients. Gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, or dairy-free? They've got you covered, too. From the colorful sprinkles to the freshly brewed coffee, it's a breakfast experience that feels like a little everyday luxury. In my opinion, it's a must-stop on any family weekend itinerary in Grand Rapids with kids!

Learn Something New Together at the Grand Rapids Public Museum

A man and his daughter look at a massive dinosaur skeleton in the entry of the Grand Rapids Public Museum.

Visiting the Grand Rapids Public Museum is a can't-miss! It's one of the best all-ages museums we've been to on our travels. If you're looking for indoor kid-friendly activities in Grand Rapids, Michigan, you have to have this museum at the top of your list.

Located in the heart of downtown, along the Grand River, the museum spans three floors of hands-on exhibits that engage visitors of all ages. There are approximately a dozen permanent exhibits, as well as a few seasonal ones that are available throughout the year. The Fashion + Nature exhibit was one of our favorites. The exhibit did a phenomenal job discussing fast fashion, who makes our clothes, and where textiles come from.

Kids will love the small play area in the Michigan Habitat exhibit. This is also an excellent exhibit for learning about Michigan's native animals, fish, and habitats.

A T-Rex skeleton part of a traveling exhibit at the Grand Rapids Public Museum.

Right now, the museum is hosting the traveling exhibit "Tyrannosaurs: Meet the Family" (open through April 26, 2026). Did you know they are still discovering new types of dinosaurs? This immersive experience explores the evolution of Tyrannosaur species from around the globe-including recent discoveries! The exhibit also features five complete cast skeletons, a life-sized Guanlong diorama, hands-on fossil casts, and large-scale projections that let you stand alongside these ancient predators. As you can see, it was certainly a highlight for us!

Have a Magical Lunch at High Tea Grand Rapids

For a truly unique experience on your fall weekend itinerary in Grand Rapids with kids, book a reservation for the Wizard's Tea at High Tea Grand Rapids. We did a 12:30 pm reservation. Not visiting in the fall? No worries, they do a year-round tea service and other seasonal events.

The Wizard's Tea is an enchanting twist on the classic British tradition. Perfect for fall activities in Grand Rapids with kids, this seasonal event immerses guests in a Harry Potter-inspired menu. Think savory autumn bites, sweet treats, and spellbinding teas!

The full afternoon tea includes a three-tiered tray with four savory and four sweet offerings, plus an authentic English scone with clotted cream and preserves (YUM!). If you prefer something a little lighter or want to mix and match the tea set-up, the Cream Tea, Tiffin, or Sweets Tea lets you pick just one tier of delicious items.

The service is terrific, the presentation is whimsical, and kids (and adults!) will love donning robes for a magical, memorable meal. It's a cozy, fun, and utterly unique experience when visiting Grand Rapids with kids.

Take a Hike at The Blandford Nature Center

A turtle at The Blandford Nature Center.

Spend the rest of the afternoon at Blandford Nature Center. It's a perfect stop for families who love animals, trails, and hands-on exploration. During our visit, we checked out the indoor and outdoor Wildlife Ambassadors and made a loop along one of the trails that goes out to the farm.

The center is home to rescued Wildlife Ambassadors, including owls, turtles, opossums, and even lynx. The ambassador animals give kids and adults a chance to connect with creatures they might not otherwise see in the wild. Each animal has an information card about their unique story. Quillber the North American Porcupine was a personal favorite for me. For us, this was one of the best outdoor things to do in Grand Rapids with kids!

A young girl plays at The Blandford Nature Center.

The grounds are perfect for hiking, with trails that wind through forests, fields, and historic buildings. There's a small play area near the farm (which also has chickens!). Plus, indoor spaces with bathrooms and a gift shop make it easy to take breaks.

Sensory bags are available for younger visitors.

Have a Family Dinner at Terra

Pasta at Terra.

We wrapped up the day with a reservation at Terra. We had our best meal of the trip here! It's undoubtedly one of the best restaurants for dinner in Grand Rapids with kids.

Known for its farm-to-fork approach, Terra sources seasonal, sustainable ingredients from local farms. Each dish is very flavorful. And, there are shareable dishes that appeal to both adults and kids. The menu features wood-fired pizzas, pasta, and other hearty entrees. Plus, there's a dedicated kids' menu to make dining stress-free for families.

The warm, welcoming atmosphere and attentive service make it easy to relax after a full day of exploring. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends.

Final Morning (Day 4) in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with Kids

And, just like that, it's time to leave Grand Rapids. On our last morning of this kid-friendly weekend itinerary for Grand Rapids, we checked out of the hotel and made a quick stop for breakfast at two nearby gems: Lyon Street Café and Nantucket Baking Company

Conveniently located next door to each other, they're easy to combine for a cozy morning meal. Grab a coffee at Lyon Street Café and pair it with a pastry from Nantucket Baking Co. If you're visiting in the fall, don't miss the pumpkin pie croissant. You can thank me later!

They complement each other beautifully. Both offer a warm, neighborhood vibe. Sit and linger, or grab it to go.

After breakfast, it was time to fly home, full of memories from a colorful, fun-filled family weekend in Grand Rapids.
