Go Horseback Riding Together

A man on a horse, following a guide, at Whispering Woods Riding Stables, a must on any couples itinerary for Lexington.

For our couples’ itinerary for Lexington, one of the highlights was a morning at Whispering Woods Riding Stables. We booked a 9:30 a.m. private ride, which meant it was just the two of us and our guide. It was ideal for a quiet, romantic adventure in the woods.

The 90-minute ride through heavily wooded trails was stunning. Along the way, we spotted deer, birds, and even butterflies along the way. We even got to trot along a straight trail for a bit! It truly felt like a magical moment, surrounded by Kentucky’s untouched natural beauty.

The horses were gentle and easy to ride, especially for new riders (like my husband). And, the staff couldn't have been friendlier. The trails offer a mix of easy paths and slightly more adventurous sections, making the ride enjoyable for both beginners and experienced riders. It's affordable and absolutely worth the 90-minute drive from Lexington!

Lunch at Wallace Station Deli and Bakery

A BLT from Wallace Station Deli and Bakery, a must on any foodie itinerary for Lexington.

After horseback riding, it's time to refuel. And, Wallace Station is the perfect next stop on your foodie itinerary for Lexington. It's a bit out of the way on the drive back toward the city, but the scenic backroads make it a picturesque detour that's absolutely worth it.

This beloved Ouita Michel restaurant is known for friendly service, fresh ingredients, and some of the best sandwiches around. We grabbed the Country Ham & Pimento Cheese and the Classic BLT, and highly recommend both. The bread-white, whole wheat, or rye-is baked by The Midway Bakery using Weisenberger Mill flour (and you can truly taste the quality!). Don't skip the seasonal cookies, either; they're dynamite. We grabbed two cookies, but the only flavor I remember is the corn cookie. It was a delight!

Two sammies with Ale 8s from Wallace Station Deli and Bakery.

There's indoor and outdoor seating and plenty of charm. Even if the line looks long, it moves quickly. It's a delicious, laid-back lunch that boasts local flavor and Kentucky hospitality.

Pop into Justin's House of Bourbon + Grab a Cone from Sorella Gelato

The bar set-up with seating ready for a tasting at Justin’s House of Bourbon.

A great addition to any couple’s itinerary for Lexington is Justin's House of Bourbon. This tasting room offers a laid-back, intimate tasting experience perfect for slowing down the afternoon.

The space is small, but that's part of the charm. Expect a cozy tasting area, unique bourbon options, and an incredible selection of finely aged bottles. We stopped in on the recommendation of the chef at Favor Kitchen, and it did not disappoint.

The staff is both knowledgeable and welcoming, offering thoughtful suggestions that helped us discover new favorites. Whether you’re sampling a flight or browsing the bottle shop, this is a fun, low-key way to explore Kentucky's bourbon culture together.

After your tasting, head down the street to Sorella Gelato. This was another fantastic local recommendation during our visit. This adorable spot has a lovely rotating selection of handcrafted, small-batch gelato. The texture was perfect, and the flavors were fresh and vibrant. The whole experience felt like a sweet little pause in the day.

Dinner at Dudley’s On Short

A lamb steak from Dudley's On Short.

After a little downtime back at the hotel, head downtown for dinner at Dudley's on Short. It's a classic choice for any romantic weekend guide to Lexington. Set in a historic building, Dudley's offers an ornate, elegant dining room that instantly elevates the evening. It's been a Lexington staple for decades, known for its use of local ingredients and thoughtfully prepared flavors.

We found the portions to be generous-honestly huge-and the service warm and attentive. While we found it a bit spendy for what it was, the atmosphere and history add something special to the experience. Overall, Dudley's on Short is a great spot for a date night, giving you a taste of Lexington's established culinary scene with a romantic, old-school charm.

I recommend making a reservation, and valet is available.

Day 2 in Lexington, KY, for Foodie Couples

After a full first day soaking in the flavors and charm of Lexington, Kentucky, we were excited to wake up and dive into even more delicious bites and fun things to do for couples around the city. Day two is all about local tastings and charming towns.

Start with an Early Lunch at Ramsey's

A hearty lunch from Ramsey’s.

After sleeping in and easing into the morning, we kicked off day two of our foodie itinerary for Lexington with an early lunch at Ramsey's. It's a local favorite and one of the best restaurants in Lexington for classic, comforting diner-style food. This spot came highly recommended, and it absolutely lived up to the hype.

The fried green tomatoes from Ramsey’s, a must on any foodie itinerary for Lexington.

The vibe is relaxed and homey, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The heaping portions feel wonderfully old-school. Order the fried green tomatoes and thank me later! They are phenomenal. Definitely leave room for pie-they're famous for a reason. The menu is packed with Southern sides, diner classics, and nostalgic favorites like the Fried Bologna Sandwich.

Everything is delicious, unfussy, and served with genuine hospitality that makes you feel like a regular, even on your first visit. If you're craving a down-to-earth lunch with tons of flavor and local charm, Ramsey's is the perfect place to start your day.

Check Out the Saturday Farmers Market in Downtown Lexington

Produce at a vendor stand at the Saturday Farmers Market in Downtown Lexington.

A fun addition to any couple’s itinerary for Lexington is a leisurely stroll through the Saturday Farmers Market downtown. After lunch, we wandered over and loved how charming and walkable it was. It's just a quick drive from lunch!

Just the right size with a great mix of vendors. You'll find local produce, handmade art, bakery treats, honey, and plenty of little foodie finds perfect for souvenirs.

It's also conveniently located near several great coffee and bagel spots, so you can sip something warm as you browse. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. This farmers market is such an enjoyable way to experience Lexington's local flavor!

Enjoy a Tasting at Castle and Key

The castle entrance to Castle and Key, near Lexington.

If you're looking for unique things to do for couples in Lexington, Kentucky, a visit to Castle & Key is an absolute must. The history alone is worth the trip. This beautifully restored distillery sits on the grounds of the former Old Taylor Distillery, originally built in 1887. It has a Great Gatsby vibe with its castle exterior and key-shaped pond in the grounds. Not to mention, stunning gardens.

You can book a guided tour to dive deeper into its story, but you don't need a reservation to enjoy the tasting room or explore the grounds like we did.

A tasting flight from Castle and Key.

The property is stunning, with picturesque gardens and plenty of room to wander. The tasting options are also flexible, depending on how much or how little you want to drink. You can choose a straight bourbon flight or sip a cocktail (or even try wine or beer if bourbon isn't your thing). There's also a large gift shop, rotating food trucks with great food, and plenty of easy parking, which makes the whole experience relaxed and stress-free. We loved the low-key tasting area and the freedom to explore at our own pace.

There are many distillery tours and tastings to choose from in and near Lexington, but this one certainly leaves an impression!

Wander Downtown Frankfort

A massive mural in Downtown Frankfort.

After Castle & Key, take a little time to wander downtown Frankfort (it's on the way back to Lexington). This charming, walkable downtown area is perfect for a relaxed afternoon of shopping. The historic streets are lined with cute shops, local art, and plenty of spots to pop into. We browsed a cozy bookstore, stopped by an art shop, and treated ourselves to ice cream-because why not on a couples getaway?

A hand holds out an iced coffee from Fireman's Coffee in Downtown Frankfort.

Be sure to grab a drink at Fireman's Coffee, too. They serve excellent seasonal specials that feel like a little treat while you shop. Plus, don't miss the murals sprinkled throughout downtown. They are gorgeous and fun to spot!

If you want to extend the exploring, downtown Georgetown is also on the way back to Lexington and is supposed to be equally adorable. It would be an easy additional stop before heading back to the city. (We opted for a nap instead, but I'm a little bummed we missed it!)

Happy Hour at Standing Room Only

Appetizer from Standing Room Only near a sake drink, a must on any foodie itinerary for Lexington.

A highlight of our foodie itinerary for Lexington was happy hour at Standing Room Only-a spot we never would've found without a local recommendation. True to its name, this tiny bar offers literally standing-room-only space, both indoors and out, modeled after traditional Japanese standing bars. It's expected that everyone orders a drink (they have NA options), and the small plates pair perfectly with the Japanese sake, shochu, and beer on the menu.

Two Japanese-inspired drinks on the bar at Standing Room Only.

The experience feels incredibly authentic. It’s casual, social, and utterly unique for Lexington. We loved the intimate vibe and the chance to try dishes and drinks we don't typically see elsewhere. It's very much a locals' hangout and ended up being one of our favorite stops of the entire trip.

Dinner at Coles 735 on Main

A couple toasts to dinner at Cole 735.

For a memorable date night on your couples’ itinerary for Lexington, head to Coles. A local described it as "very Lexington," and we immediately understood why. The atmosphere feels like a charming garden party. Light, airy, and full of character. And, of course, plenty of horse-inspired art.

A beautifully plated dinner from Cole 735, a must on any foodie itinerary for Lexington.

The menu is inventive yet comforting, showcasing local meats, fresh vegetables, beautiful house-pickled accents, and bread baked daily. Every dish feels intentional and beautifully prepared, with an eclectic, global touch on Southern cuisine. The cocktails are fantastic, the wine list is impressive, and the staff is warm and attentive without feeling too formal. It was one of our favorite date-night dinners of the trip-delicious, cozy, and unmistakably Lexington. It's perfect for any romantic weekend in Lexington!

I recommend making a reservation.

Day 3 in Lexington, KY, for Foodie Couples

Start day three with breakfast at the hotel. Refueled and ready, set out to explore more fun things to do in Lexington for couples. Today, you'll soak in even more delicious bites, scenic spots, and more.

Take a Walk at The Arboretum (State Botanical Garden of Kentucky)

Flowers with butterflies in a garden at The Arboretum.

A peaceful Sunday morning in Lexington calls for a stroll through The Arboretum. This local gem is one of our favorite outdoor things to do for couples. Located on the University of Kentucky campus, this public garden showcases the beauty of Kentucky landscapes and is free to visit.

We started with the garden walk, which was stunning! It was brimming with colorful flowers and fluttering butterflies. Paved and gravel trails wind through rose and other gardens. There is plenty of variety for a leisurely morning walk.

Antonia and her husband enjoy a beautiful garden at The Arboretum, a must on any couples itinerary for Lexington.

Locals and students frequent the trails, giving the space a welcoming, community feel. Between the diverse native plant collections and the wide paths, the Arboretum is the ideal spot to slow down, enjoy nature, and savor a quiet moment together in the heart of Lexington.

Lunch & Live Music at Kentucky Native Café

Several dishes from Kentucky Native Café in a beautiful garden setting, a must on any foodie itinerary for Lexington.

A highlight of our foodie itinerary for Lexington (and a must for any romantic weekend!) is lunch at Kentucky Native Café. This local gem, tucked into a greenhouse with secret-garden vibes, serves fresh, plant-forward dishes that are as beautiful as they are delicious.

We arrived just in time for live music (which starts at noon on Sundays). It was such a delight to listen to a fun bluegrass band while we ate. Plus, the garden provided an enchanting backdrop as we relaxed near the band.

The menu is primarily vegetarian, with rotating small plates, salads, soups, hot pretzels, and cheese boards perfect for sharing. We loved everything we tried! Not a bad bite in the whole afternoon. Pair your meal with craft beer, wine, or a refreshing NA option. The garden setting feels simply magical.

For us, the combination of great food, live music, and the charming garden atmosphere made this stop one of the most memorable meals of our Lexington trip.

Explore the Distillery District

Historic brick buildings in the Distillery District.

Spend the rest of your last afternoon in Lexington in the Distillery District. This is a can't-miss stop and a perfect addition to any foodie itinerary for Lexington. This historic area was once home to the James E. Pepper Distillery, dating back to 1879. After nearly 50 years of abandonment, it was revitalized and transformed into a lively district full of tasting rooms, restaurants, and historic brick charm. There are several places to choose from here! I'll share more about the ones we went to.

A hand holds out a cone of Honey Bourbon ice cream from Crank & Boom, a must on any foodie itinerary for Lexington.

We loved wandering through the district. There are so many fun spots to pop in for a bite or a flight. Crank & Boom ice cream is a must. Don't miss the Bourbon Honey flavor. And, there are a few other boozy combinations for the adventurous.

Two flights from Wise Bird Cider.

Then, Wise Bird Cider is a great hangout. In addition to their ciders and flights, there is usually a food truck with great eats. Grab some games to enjoy while sipping cider. They have indoor and outdoor seating to sit and enjoy.

The Distillery District is the ultimate spot to immerse yourself in Lexington's food, drink, and history, all in one vibrant, walkable setting.

Happy Hour at Lost Palm

Small tacos from Lost Palm, a must on any foodie itinerary for Lexington.

For a dreamy happy hour on the last day of your couples’ itinerary in Lexington, head to Lost Palm. This leafy rooftop bar is perched atop the Manchester Hotel (on the edge of the Distillery District). Take the elevator straight up to a tropical-inspired space filled with plants, cozy nooks, and gorgeous views of downtown. Lost Palm is Lexington's chic, sun-soaked escape.

We loved the fun drink menu-tropical cocktails, creative mocktails, and plenty of options for sharing. The small plates are flavorful and excellent for lingering a little before dinner. It is undoubtedly one of the best places to eat or enjoy a happy hour in Lexington, Kentucky.

I recommend making a reservation, and valet parking is available.

Dinner at Corto Lima

Guac and chips, and colorful drinks, from Corto Lima, a must on any foodie itinerary for Lexington.

End your evening (and weekend in Lexington) with one of our favorite stops on this foodie itinerary for Lexington. Corto Lima is a small but vibrant Latin-inspired restaurant on the edge of downtown. This intimate spot doesn't take reservations, but it's absolutely worth the wait-especially if you can snag seats at the bar. We did, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip thanks to the incredible bartenders and the lively local vibe.

The menu leans into bold, flavorful Latin cuisine, featuring small plates, tacos, and inventive entrées made with house-crafted corn tortillas. Don't miss the guac, the standout ceviche, or the excellent margaritas. These were all highlights for us! Corto Lima easily ranks among the best restaurants in Lexington for couples who love great food and an even better atmosphere.
