Apple orchards are a fall favorite for many families, and one of Minnesota’s best things to do in September and October! Offering more than just fresh-picked apples, many orchards also feature charming countryside settings and fun activities for the whole family. We love the kid-friendly activities like wagon rides, hay mountains, and farm animals. Not to mention, well-stocked farm stores with delicious baked goods, cute decor, and more. Whether you’re hunting for the perfect Honeycrisp or just looking for a quintessential fall activity, a visit to a local orchard is a must on any fall bucket list.

Here are our top picks for apple orchards within a 90-minute drive from Minneapolis. Each offers some of the best fall things to do with kids in Minnesota, including apple picking, wagon rides, yummy treats, and more:

Picking pumpkins in Minnesota is an iconic fall activity for families – and the perfect addition to your Minnesota fall bucket list. Stroll through vibrant pumpkin patches, where kids can search for the perfect pumpkin to carve into a ghoulish masterpiece or decorate the front porch. Many patches also offer hayrides, corn mazes, and seasonal treats, turning the outing into a full day of autumn fun. Whether you’re looking for the biggest pumpkin in the patch or a unique shape, the thrill of the hunt makes it a memorable experience for kids and parents alike!

Involve the kids in the baking process-let them help mix, roll out dough, or sprinkle cinnamon on top. Baking with your freshly picked produce is undoubtedly one of the best fall things to do with kids in Minnesota!

Rent a Houseboat or Boat to Explore Voyageur National Park

Looking for a unique fall getaway with your adventurous kids? While fall temperature may be dropping, that doesn't mean your family can't enjoy one more lake day before the snow flies! Voyageur National Park is Minnesota's only national park, and it's an excellent spot for a family trip in early autumn.

Mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and minimal bugs make fall a fun time to visit for many families. September offers the best weather and fall colors. You still want to be prepared for chilly temperatures, however. Dress in layers and watch for possible weather changes during your visit. Many operators end their season in October. Keep an eye on available fall dates while making your plans. You simply can't beat the fall foliage in this part of Minnesota, so it's worth the extra planning!

Start your voyage in Crane Lake. Here, you can stock up on any provisions your family may need for the journey, and find family-friendly outfitters that will get you ready to explore! Crane Lake also offers plenty of kid-friendly trails, accommodations, and restaurants outside the park. If you're not camping or staying on the water, it's a great home base for exploring the area.

There are two fantastic ways to enjoy time on the water in Crane Lake and Voyageur National Park this fall:

Chase Fall Colors on a Hike

A young girl looks at a view of the river, while hiking at Interstate State Park, one of the best fall things to do with kids in Minnesota.

This might be my favorite fall activity in Minnesota! Embrace the vibrant hues of autumn by taking the family on a hike through Minnesota's stunning landscapes. As the leaves turn to brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, the state's trails become a kaleidoscope of color, perfect for a fall adventure with kids. Whether exploring the North Shore’s rugged beauty or the Mississippi River’s bluffs, a hike is a great way to experience the season up close. Kids will love the crunch of leaves underfoot and spotting wildlife as you wander through the woods. Finally, hiking is certainly one of the best free fall activities near Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

Here are my top picks for the best fall hikes near Minneapolis:

Get Lost in a Corn Maze

A dad and his young daughter play a game during a fall festival in Chisago Lakes, one of the best fall things to do with kids in Minnesota.

Getting lost in a corn maze is one of the best (albeit slightly stressful) fall things to do with kids in Minnesota. Minnesota's corn mazes offer plenty of twists and turns, as well as tons of family fun as you and your kids navigate through towering stalks. Whether you challenge your kids to a race to find the exit or just enjoy the journey together, each maze is filled with laughter and excitement. Many farms add an extra touch to their corn mazes, like treasure hunts or nighttime maze adventures, making them even more fun.

My favorite corn maze in Minnesota is the one offered at Slattengren Farms in Shafer. There are two levels of corn mazes, and they offer a night maze, too. After the maze, you can enjoy fun lawn games, a charming country store (with ice cream and all things maple), as well as concessions. Most activities are free, but the corn maze requires a small admission fee. Spending the day at Slattengren Farms is one of my favorite things to do in Minnesota in September and October!

Embark on a Fall Paddle

Canoes at rest on the St. Croix River on a sunny day.

Add a canoe outing to your family's Minnesota fall bucket list! There's something magical about gliding across calm water framed by fiery reds, oranges, and golds.

In the Twin Cities, paddle the Chain of Lakes in Minneapolis. Or, try beautiful Lake Harriet. Of course, Lake Nokomis and Bde Maka Ska are lovely this time of year. Most Minneapolis lakes also have rental opportunities going into the fall.

For a longer route (with rental gear options), head to Taylors Falls to paddle down the St. Croix River. Taylors Falls Canoe & Kayak Rental offers family-friendly rentals into October (weather permitting). We recommend the One-Way Trip to Osceola. Depart from Interstate State Park, paddle down the St. Croix River, and land in Osceola. From there, they'll pick you up and shuttle you back to the parking lot. This is one of our favorite paddle routes in Minnesota!

No matter which body of water you choose, check the weather first. Then, pack some hot cocoa in a thermos and layer up. Along the way, let the gentle currents spark conversation, laughter, and a sense of adventure in your family!

Take a Fall Llama or Alpaca Trek

Antonia and her family stand with their llamas while on a llama trek.

For a truly unique fall outing, consider a family alpaca or llama trek. These gentle, fluffy animals make for unforgettable hiking companions. Our family loves these kinds of treks! I think fall colors would only add to the experience. Many farms offer hands-on experiences that are perfect for kids eager to learn more about these beautiful creatures. Just check the fine print, some farms have age limits for leading the llamas.

Here are a few great options near Minneapolis:

  • Carlson's Loveable Llamas: Enjoy a scheduled farm visit where kids can pet, lead, and even hike with llamas on scenic trails.
  • W. Oaks Alpacas: Learn all about alpacas, walk one yourself, and browse cozy alpaca products in their farm store.
  • Rector Llamas: About three hours from Minneapolis, this is our top pick! Join a guided llama trek through beautiful fall landscapes (including a pond, scenic bridge, and more!). Suitable for kids 9 and up, it's a peaceful, hands-on adventure you won't forget.
