Duluth, Minnesota, has a special place in our hearts. We lived here during our college days, and it's where we met! Bringing our tween daughter back felt like rediscovering an old friend. This 3-day weekend itinerary for Duluth with kids is built around our own recent trip (with some updates to make it even better for you!). It features a mix of nostalgic favorites and new finds perfect for families looking to explore beyond Canal Park.

We recently visited in early fall, when Duluth's weather can't make up its mind. Misty mornings, sunny afternoons, and a chill off Lake Superior that sneaks up on you. All part of Duluth's charm! Whether it's sunny or drizzly, there's always something fun to do in Duluth. In this guide, you'll find plenty of indoor things to do in Duluth with kids (just in case it does rain!). Plus, kid-friendly hikes in Duluth that are beautiful year-round. So pack your layers, embrace the unpredictability, and get ready for a weekend full of adventure (rain or shine!). This is how I would spend 3 days exploring Duluth with kids!

Tips + Packing List for Duluth with Kids

A family of three sits together on a massive I Heart Duluth sign near Canal Park.

If you are planning a weekend itinerary in Duluth, Minnesota, with your kids, there are a few things to keep in mind. From the best time to visit Duluth to a few family packing tips, this is what I would want to know when planning a family trip to northern Minnesota.

A Few Tips

Here are a few of my tips for visiting Duluth with kids:

  • Duluth is fun in every season (especially when you embrace it!). While Duluth is a popular summer destination, it is fun year-round with kids. This itinerary is based on an early fall visit.
  • Don't skip Canal Park, BUT don't only explore Canal Park either. Canal Park offers easy access to shops, restaurants, and the Aerial Lift Bridge (a huge hit with kids). And, it's not the only cool part of Duluth. Spend time outside of Canal Park, too. This itinerary will help you do that!
  • Leave time for the unexpected. Duluth is best enjoyed slowly. Some of the best memories you can make in Duluth with your kids come from spontaneous moments. Watching the fog roll in. Skip rocks. Count ships offshore.
  • Book in advance. Duluth is one of Minnesota’s most popular destinations. Especially during peak seasons (summer and the December holidays), hotels book quickly and get spendy. Book in advance for the best deals and availability. Locals recommend booking 2-3 months in advance.
  • Lake Superior is nearly always cold. While the shore may feel warmer, don't expect it to be swimmable for long. Pack rain boots for kids who can't stay out of the water.
  • Expect wind. Duluth is Minnesota's windy city. Expect wind, and always have at least a light jacket with you (no matter the season). The weather can turn unexpectedly.

Packing Tips for Duluth with Kids

In addition to the things you usually pack for a vacation with kids, don't forget these things for traveling to Duluth with kids:

  • Layers for everyone. Even in July, Lake Superior's breeze can feel cold. Pack hoodies, rain jackets, and a few cozy layers for evenings by the water.
  • Water shoes and extra socks. Between skipping rocks, wading at Park Point, and exploring creeks at Lester or Chester Park, kids are bound to get wet.
  • Binoculars. They are ideal for spotting ships coming into the harbor or birds along the Lakewalk. Plus, they are a fun, low-tech way to keep kids engaged.
  • Beach toys and kites. Park Point's sandy stretch is perfect for both.
  • Comfortable shoes, a reusable water bottle, and snacks. Between hikes, playground stops, and exploring Canal Park, these three things always keep the adventures going!
  • Rain gear. Spring, summer, and fall visitors can reasonably expect rain (even if just a little). Pack rain jackets or waterproof shoes to ensure you can keep exploring!
  • Beach blanket or picnic mat. You'll find plenty of lakefront picnic spots and grassy overlooks that are perfect for snack breaks or a quick rest.

Day 1 in Duluth with Kids

Your first day in Duluth with kids is all about getting settled and getting your first taste of the city's superior charm. Start slow. Take in those Lake Superior views, stretch your legs after the drive, and let the kids burn off some energy at a local park or playground.

Arrive + Get Settled: Where to Stay in Duluth with Kids

A cozy room at Pier B Resort Hotel.

If you're like us and going to Duluth after work on a Friday, you'll arrive just in time to check in and grab dinner. We rolled into town in the late afternoon (around 5:00 or 5:30 p.m.), ready to kick off our weekend itinerary for Duluth with kids with a relaxing start.

A young girl enjoys a view of Bayfront Festival Park and the Aerial Lift Bridge from her hotel room at Pier B Resort Hotel.

After checking into Pier B Resort Hotel, we instantly remembered why it's one of the best hotels in Duluth with kids. Pier B sits just outside Canal Park, close enough to walk to all the action but far enough to feel like your own quiet retreat. It's also on the edge of Bayfront Festival Park, so you'll have a front row view of events like Bentleyville!

Pier B Resort Hotel's outdoor hot tub overlooks the harbor and Aerial Lift Bridge. It's perfect for unwinding after the drive while ships pass by. The rooms are comfortable, with a modern industrial feel and plenty of configurations for families. We had a king and a pull-out couch, which was ideal for our family of three (especially since the room also had a small table and seating area!). On-site dining makes dinner easy, especially if you're arriving later in the day. Pier B Resort Hotel is the ideal spot to settle in, watch the sunset, and ease into Duluth mode. Plus, it's a pretty affordable option considering the typical prices in Canal Park.

Here are a few more family-friendly hotels in Duluth to consider:

  • Beacon Pointe on Lake Superior
  • Canal Park Lodge
  • South Pier Inn
  • The Inn on Lake Superior
  • Engler Lofts
  • The Inn on Gitche Gumee
  • Fitger's Inn
  • Zenith Basecamp
  • Lift Bridge Lodge, Ascend Hotel Collection
  • Hampton Inn Duluth Canal Park
  • Holiday Inn & Suites Duluth-Downtown, an IHG Hotel
  • Sheraton Duluth Hotel
  • Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Duluth North
  • Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Duluth Waterfront

Stroll Along Bayfront Festival Park

Antonia and her young daughter take in the views from Bayfront Festival Park.

Once you've settled in, take a short walk from your hotel to Bayfront Festival Park. It's one of our favorite easy walks when visiting Duluth with kids. This beautiful waterfront area offers sweeping views of the harbor and the Aerial Lift Bridge, plus wide paths perfect for strolling with little ones.

You'll find historical markers along the way that tell the story of Duluth's shipping and rail history, making it a fun mini-lesson for curious kids (and adults!). It's generally not crowded, so you can slow down, watch the boats glide by, and take in the skyline as the evening light hits Lake Superior. It's the perfect way to stretch your legs, breathe in that fresh lake air, and start your weekend feeling fully in Duluth.

PS: This is where they host Bentleyville in the winter!

Dinner at Sara’s Table, Chester Creek Cafe

A bison dish from Sara's Table, Chester Creek Cafe.

For a cozy first-night dinner, head up the hill to At Sara's Table Chester Creek Café. I think it's one of the best places to eat in Duluth with kids. This homey, unassuming spot has an eclectic menu that works for everyone. You'll find everything from comfort-food classics to creative vegetarian dishes. There's a kids' menu, but our daughter went straight for the GBLT (yes, guacamole on a BLT!) and loved every bite.

The vibe is a bit rustic but never over-the-top. Just warm, welcoming, and relaxed. During the day, the café doubles as a neighborhood hangout with specialty coffees and fresh pastries, but in the evening, it's the perfect place to unwind and connect as a family. It's the kind of local gem that reminds you why Duluth's food scene is so special. Thoughtful, cozy, and always made with heart.

Day 2 in Duluth with Kids

After a good night's rest, it's time to dive into day two of your Duluth with kids adventure. Today's all about exploring the city's wild side, including some of my favorite kid-friendly hikes in Duluth.

Breakfast + Coffee at The Loch Café & Games

Breakfast treats from The Loch Café & Games.

Start your day at The Loch Café & Games, a cozy spot that's perfect for families. Not to mention, a great addition to any Duluth weekend itinerary with kids. Grab a coffee, pastry, or sandwich while the kids explore the shelves of games available to borrow. They have everything from board games to a Super Nintendo emulator for a little nostalgic fun.

A family plays a card game together at The Loch Café & Games.

This café is ideal for a slower morning or for one of those rainy day activities in Duluth, letting kids play and adults relax without worrying about the weather. During our recent fall visit, we had a rainy morning, so we started here. We didn't even notice the rain had stopped. We were having so much fun playing Exploding Kittens! The Loch Café & Games is a warm, inviting way to fuel up before heading out for hikes, lakefront adventures, or museum stops later in the day.

Visit Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory

A young girl takes in the sweeping views of Duluth from Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory.

For a truly unique and free thing to do in Duluth with kids, head to Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory. It is a MUST if you are visiting during fall migration.

From September through October, tens of thousands of raptors (Bald and Golden Eagles, Broad-winged Hawks, Red-tailed Hawks, and Northern Goshawks) pass overhead. It's an unforgettable experience for kids and adults alike, especially if you visit during the "Big Days" (roughly September 10-25) or at any time with favorable west- or northwest-winds. We visited during this time, but unfortunately, the winds and weather were not in our favor. We did pop up twice during the weekend, and on the second visit, we saw one falcon-which made it worth it!

The sweeping views of Duluth on a sunny day from Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory.

Naturalist staff and volunteers are on site during migration to help with bird identification, offer live demonstrations, and provide kid-friendly activities. Talking with them is a great way to make learning about the migration even more fun and engaging.

Outside of the migration season, it's still a great place to visit. Hawk Ridge is also perfect for families who enjoy kid-friendly hikes in Duluth. There are roughly 4 miles of trails ranging from rugged hikes to short, accessible walks along the main overlook.

Dress in layers, bring sturdy shoes, snacks, and water, and plan to visit mid-day (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) for the best viewing. Whether it's sunny or windy, Hawk Ridge offers an incredible hands-on nature experience that makes your Duluth weekend unforgettable.

Hike at Hartley Nature Center

A family of three hikes together at Hartley Nature Center, one of the best things to do in Duluth with kids.

Next, stop at arguably one of the best things to do in Duluth with kids! No matter the season, we love spending time at Hartley Nature Center. This large city park in Duluth's Woodland neighborhood has it all. Trails wind through woods, ponds, streams, and plenty of space for kids to explore.

With some of the top kid-friendly hikes in Duluth along miles of multi-use trails (and even portions of the famed Superior Hiking Trail!), families can enjoy everything from leisurely strolls to more adventurous treks.

A young girl plays in the creek at Hartley Nature Center.

Hartley isn't just about trails, though! Inside the nature center, there's a small exhibit space and indoor bathrooms. The exhibit space even features a few turtles and other wildlife ambassadors. Kids will LOVE the fenced play area. And, of course, the fantastic creek play area where kids can splash and explore. This was a highlight for my daughter. She played here for nearly 30 minutes before we even started our hike! Afterward, on our hike, we even saw a deer and tons of birds.

Rentals for mountain bikes, skis, and snowshoes make it a year-round destination. And, the park also features indoor bathrooms and a track wheelchair for accessibility. Whether your family wants to hike, spot wildlife, or just enjoy a picnic by Hartley Pond, this park is a must-stop on any Duluth weekend with kids.

Grab Lunch at  Sir Benedict's Tavern on the Lake

Soup and a sandwich from Sir Benedict’s Tavern on the Lake.

When it's time for a midday refuel, I recommend heading to Sir Benedict's Tavern on the Lake. It is hands-down one of the best places to eat in Duluth with kids. This local institution offers a warm, authentic English pub atmosphere with stunning Lake Superior views. It was a favorite when I was in college, in my late 20s, and now as a parent. Sir Ben's never fails to be delicious! It feeds the soul just as much as it does the stomach.

A man and his young daughter play chess while waiting for their food at Sir Benedict’s Tavern on the Lake.

The menu is approachable and family-friendly, with sandwiches and soups that always hit the spot. Plus, there is a kids' menu for little foodies. You order at the counter, then settle in (whether indoors or on the patio). As you wait, enjoy the relaxed, friendly vibe. There might be a line to order, but I promise that it's worth it!

For adults, local brews are also available. The sandwich-and-soup combo is our go-to. If you're wondering, the English onion soup and half Reuben is an elite combination! Sir Ben's is my perfect way to recharge between adventures in Duluth with kids.

Check for Local Events: Chester Bowl Fall Fest

A man and his daughter walk through the vendors at Chester Bowl Fall Fest.

A highlight of our fall trip was the Chester Bowl Fall Fest. This long-standing community festival was a fun, seasonal addition to our weekend itinerary for Duluth with kids.

The festival was easy to navigate. They even had a shuttle from the parking lot. There were plenty of food vendors and local crafts to keep us meandering, munching, and connecting with locals. They even had a dedicated kids' area. Our daughter loved running around the playground while we explored the booths and enjoyed the lively community vibe.

Chester Bowl Fall Fest is just one example of why it's worth checking the Visit Duluth event calendars when planning your trip. There's always something happening in Duluth. Festivals, farmers' markets, and seasonal events add energy and flavor to a weekend with kids. Not to mention, they often provide unique experiences you won't find anywhere else (or during another visit)!

Enjoy a Dinner Cruise with Vista Fleet

A young girl smiles as she enjoys the harbor views from aboard the Vista Fleet.

For one of the best activities AND places to eat in Duluth with kids, we highly recommend a Vista Fleet dinner cruise. We went on the Harvest Dinner Cruise around the harbor, but there are so many options for every season. You can even choose from sunset and cocktail cruises to family-friendly sightseeing experiences.

Vista Fleet offers a unique perspective of Duluth. Step out onto any of the decks for 360-degree views of the Superior Harbor and Lake Superior. Watch the sunrise or sunset (depending on the cruise). And, learn about the local history of Twin Ports ships and industries.

A catered meal aboard the Vista Fleet on their Harvest Dinner Cruise.

Our dinner was catered by local restaurant Black Woods Grill & Bar (but I think the caterer depends on the cruise, and they switch it up between local restaurants). Plus, there's a paid bar for adults. Highlights from our cruise included seeing the docks where the Edmund Fitzgerald last departed and taking in the lake's ever-changing scenery. Our cruise just did a peek at Lake Superior, but I think others may go under the Aerial Lift Bridge and showcase different treks. Read carefully about each tour if you have a specific vision or experience in mind.

A cruise with Vista Fleet is a unique way to combine delicious food, family fun, and unforgettable harbor views. It is truly a must-do on your Duluth weekend with kids (in my opinion).

Grab Something Sweet from Love Creamery

A hand holds out a cone with two scoops from Love Creamery in Canal Park.

If you didn't have dessert on the ship, walk over to Love Creamery in Canal Park. A 5-minute walk, it is a tasty spot to end your day! They offer tons of creative flavors, vegan options, and soft-serve classics. It's easy to find something everyone loves. We recommend the Goat Cheese Honeycomb or any of the chocolate options! While there might be a line out the door, it's worth it for a scoop or two. The line usually moves pretty quickly.

Day 3 in Duluth with Kids

On your final day in Duluth with kids, it's time to enjoy a view of the city's tried and true highlights. From the trendy Lincoln Park Craft District to Canal Park, today is all about soaking in a few more eats and sights with your family.

Breakfast + Coffee at Dovetail Cafe & Marketplace

Coffee and scones from Dovetail Cafe & Marketplace.

Start your final morning at Dovetail Café & Marketplace. It's one of my new favorite places to grab coffee or breakfast in Duluth with kids. Nestled in the trendy Lincoln Park Craft District, Dovetail offers a cozy space with plenty of seating, delicious pastries, hearty breakfast options, and great coffee (an excellent stop for fueling up before a day of exploring!).

Beyond the café, the small market area is a treat for browsing local artisan goods, from prints and pottery to jewelry and home goods. It's a fun spot for everyone to browse while waiting for their food and drinks.

As a partner project of the Duluth Folk School, Dovetail focuses on community and creativity, making it a welcoming, inspiring stop for families. Whether you're looking for a quick breakfast, a relaxing coffee break, or a little shopping adventure, Dovetail is a must-visit on your upcoming Duluth weekend with kids.

If you have time, keep exploring the Lincoln Park Craft District! There are so many cute shops and eateries here.

See the Marine Life at the Great Lakes Aquarium

A man and his young daughter look at fish in a tank at Great Lakes Aquarium.

If the weather turns rainy or you just need a break from the trails, the Great Lakes Aquarium is one of our favorite stops in Duluth with kids. We even had one of our first dates here when we met in college!

During our most recent visit, our daughter loved splashing around the touch tanks and water play area! On that note, a clean shirt stashed in the car doesn't hurt. We also said hi to the massive 60+ year-old snapping turtle (his name is Crush!). And, of course, watching the jellyfish float by. Time it right, and you can even check out the jellyfish touch tank!

A family peers into a large fish tank at Great Lakes Aquarium.

The aquarium isn't just fun for kids; it's full of little learning moments for everyone. Exhibits showcase the St. Louis River, Baptism River, and Isle Royale, giving visitors a sense of Duluth's unique waterways and habitats. There's even an indoor play area for a quick energy burn (on the second floor). Pop into the gift shop to grab a quirky souvenir to remember the day. With big windows overlooking Lake Superior, it's easy to forget a rainy day ever existed while exploring and discovering local and global marine life together.

Walk along Canal Park + Look for Ships

A family strolls along Canal Park near the iconic lighthouse.

No trip to Duluth with kids is complete without a stroll along Canal Park. Wide, stroller-friendly paths make it easy to wander at your own pace while keeping an eye out for ships gliding through the harbor. This is one of the most iconic Duluth spots and one of the best free things to do in Duluth with kids.

Kids love watching the Aerial Lift Bridge rise and lower for passing vessels. Not to mention, walking out to the lighthouse! Of course, there's plenty of space to stop, take pictures, or just enjoy the fresh lake breeze. If you have time, make sure you trek along the Lakewalk! It offers some of the best views of Lake Superior.

A foggy view of downtown Duluth from Canal Park.

Even if you've seen it before, the changing light over Lake Superior makes every visit feel new. It's simple, low-cost, and endlessly entertaining, making it the perfect way to wrap up your Duluth weekend with the family.

In addition to being a popular place to walk around and take in lake views, Canal Park is FILLED with shops, restaurants, museums, and more. Here are a few things to do in Canal Park that may interest you if you have time in your schedule:

Lunch at Northern Waters Smokehaus

A sandwich spread from Northern Waters Smokehaus.

For one of the best places to eat lunch in Duluth with kids, head to Northern Waters Smokehaus. It is right in the heart of Canal Park. This quirky, gourmet deli is a family favorite, offering a huge menu of sandwiches, smoked fish, handcrafted meats, and artisan salumi (truly something for everyone!).

The shop is cozy but welcoming, offering both indoor and patio seating. The team is friendly and happy to answer questions or recommend favorites, making it easy to navigate the menu with kids in tow. With fresh, local ingredients and creative sandwich options, lunch here is not only delicious but also a fun experience that's perfect for families exploring Duluth.
