If you’re here, you must be looking for fun things to do with kids in Grand Marais this winter. Welcome! I adore this part of Minnesota and have been visiting for the better part of 20 years. Luckily, I also call Grand Marais “home” as my in-laws live here.
I love the North Shore and Grand Marias in every season…but winter might just be my favorite. Hiking or snowshoeing along fresh snow is so magical, especially when you find moose or lynx prints. Wearing snow pants to Voyageurs brings me a strange sense of joy, and no one bats an eye. And, I love the hygge feeling of Grand Marain in the winter, spending cozy nights by the fire after days spent exploring quiet forests.
If you’re traveling to Grand Marais with kids this winter, here are our favorite things to do! From searching for frozen waterfalls to learning new things at local heritage centers, there are so many exciting activities for families. Keep reading to learn more about my recommendations for exploring Grand Marais this winter with kids.
Explore the Best Hiking Trails near Grand Marais this Winter
Hiking is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do with kids in Grand Marais this winter! From packed trails to frozen waterfalls, there are endless trails beckoning you to explore together. Whether you are looking for a quick walk or a day-long adventure, these trails will keep you outdoors and having fun this winter.
Even during the winter months, many trails are well-maintained and often packed down, making snowshoes unnecessary on established trails (unless it’s right after a fresh snowfall). Depending on the time of the season, you can also expect some icy conditions (especially during freeze-thaw periods). It’s best to have ice cleats (and maybe hiking poles) with you for stability. Keep reading to discover my favorite trails near Grand Marais with kids.
Note: Many Minnesota State Parks offer warming houses throughout the season to warm up after a hike. Find hours for warming houses on the respective state park pages.

Winter Hiking Trails near Grand Marais
If you’re traveling to Grand Marais with kids, you’ll undoubtedly want to add hiking to your itinerary! There are several great hikes in the area, whether you want to get out and stretch your legs or embark on an epic adventure.
For those seeking impressive views of Lake Superior, the Oberg Mountain Trail is an excellent choice for a winter hike in Minnesota (moderate, 2.3-mile loop trail). Personally, I think Oberg Mountain is one of the best things to do near Grand Marais! In fact, it’s my favorite hike in Minnesota. I’ve done it in every season, and it never fails to impress.
Alternatively, Magnetic Rock Trail (easy, 4.3-mile out-and-back trail) is an excellent option for those exploring the Gunflint Trail. It will take up most of the day. This includes the drive from town, and a lunch stop afterward. Trail Center At Poplar Lake or Poplar Haus Restaurant & Bar are the best lunch options with kids on the way back to Grand Marais. The 60-foot monolith at the trail’s end is well worth the time and effort, however! In fact, this hike is one of my daughter’s all-time favorite hikes.
Finally, Temperance River State Park or Kadunce River Wayside Trail are also great winter options.

Search for Frozen Waterfalls near Grand Marais
Want to level up your hiking options near Grand Marais this winter with kids? Search for frozen waterfalls! Several trails near Grand Marais lead to picturesque frozen falls. The closest (and easiest) frozen waterfall to reach is at Cascade River State Park. In fact, if you don’t want much of a hike and only want to see the falls, it’s only about a 5-minute walk to reach it from the parking lot. For a bit more of a trek, head past the falls to the bridge that crosses the river. This will make a loop back to the parking lot.
Alternatively, go to Judge C.R. Magney State Park to see the iconic Devil’s Kettle (moderate, 2 miles out and back). Once a place of mystery, kids will love this hike for its winding trails, immense staircase (~200 steps), and, of course, iconic double falls. One side of the falls goes directly over the edge, while the other simply disappears. The mystery of the disappearing water was only recently solved (it travels underground and resurfaces upstream). This is definitely a trail that everyone will want ice cleats.
Finally, head up to Grand Portage State Park. Nestled on the border of Minnesota and Canada (about 45 minutes from Grand Marais), this state park is home to the tallest waterfall in Minnesota! High Falls Trail (easy, 1.1 miles out and back) is a boardwalk/paved trail leading to the spectacular Pigeon Falls. Check out the indoor heritage center if it is open too (it’s free). Grand Portage State Park does not require vehicle permits, making it one of the only free state parks on Minnesota’s North Shore all year round.
Undoubtedly, searching for these magnificent falls is one of the things to do in Grand Marais this winter!

Hike + Visit the Heritage Center at Grand Portage National Monument
Last, but certainly not least, on my list of fantastic winter hikes near Grand Marais is Mount Rose (easy, 1.2-mile loop trail). This family-friendly trail is located at Grand Portage National Monument. There are two trailheads (one opposite the parking lot, and one a short walk down from the Heritage Center). Take the trailhead past the Heritage Center if you want a shorter hike. The trail offers excellent views of Lake Superior. You can even see Mount Josephine and Isle Royale on a clear day! Note, however, that the trail can be very steep in some areas and includes some rustic stairs.
Afterward, explore the cozy interactive exhibits inside the Grand Portage National Monument Heritage Center. This center offers exhibits on the history of the Anishinaabe peoples and culture, as well as the impact of the fur trade on this area. Because it’s a national monument area, kids can do the Junior Ranger program! We learned so much here during our recent visit. In my opinion, it’s a must-stop for anyone traveling to the North Shore.
Catch a Sunset over the Lighthouse
Then, when you visit Grand Marais in the winter, you must enjoy at least one sunset at the Grand Marais Lighthouse. The sunsets here are UNREAL! Arrive at the lighthouse about 20-30 minutes before sunset and simply enjoy.
Be careful, though. Depending on the recent weather and waves, the lead-up to the lighthouse may be covered in ice. It can also be very windy and much colder here than in town; dress warmly. If it’s too cold or icy, the parking lot is a great place to enjoy the sunset with a view of the lighthouse.
Alternatively, you can catch a sunrise over Artists’ Point (the opposite side from the lighthouse). Walk through the woods, or along the lakeside rocks to the end of the point. The sunrise here is truly outstanding and shouldn’t be missed!
This is one of my favorite Grand Marais things to do. And, something I rarely miss when visiting in the winter (or anytime really!). A quick Google search will tell you the sunset or sunrise times, as well as if it will be too overcast to catch the sun.

Meander the Harbor + Downtown Grand Marais
Exploring the harbor and downtown Grand Marais is not to be missed when visiting with kids. In fact, Artists’ Point and the Grand Marais Lighthouse are two of the most iconic places in town. You can easily reach both from downtown, either by car or by foot. Once you arrive, spend time walking around and enjoying the views.
Likewise, it’s a great time to check out the harbor beach. Studded with fun-looking ice, kids will have a great time searching for rocks to skip across the ice or into the open water (depending on the season).
Then, if you want to go shopping, here are my favorite local shops to peek into:
- The Big Lake Life (I rarely leave town without stopping here!)
- Roam & Whimsy Co. (one of the newest + cutest shops in town!)
- Upstate MN
- Drury Lane Books
- Sivertson Gallery
- The Fisherman’s Daughter
- Beth’s Fudge & Gifts
- Joy & Company
Finally, the Cook County History Museum is open in winter (Fridays and Saturdays only – closed in November). You can visit the former lightkeeper’s residence, built in 1896. It has a great collection of exhibits to learn more about local history. If you’re traveling with kids, this is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Grand Marais this winter.
Take a Moment to Relax at Sisu and Löyly
For a relaxing experience in Grand Marais, especially if you’re traveling with older kids (or without kids), book a session at Sisu and Löyly. This Nordic sauna experience by Lake Superior is an excellent addition to any winter itinerary. The saunas even offer a view of Artists’ Point!
Upon arrival, change into the provided robes and slippers and head to your sauna. You have control over the steam level by adding water as needed, which is beneficial for those who may find saunas challenging to breathe in – like me! In fact, this is one of the best and most relaxing sauna experiences I’ve ever had.
Take a break from the sauna in the cozy outdoor bonfire area or indoor lounge. Brave souls may even opt for a polar plunge in the lake (consult the front desk for safety guidelines and location).
Sauna use is available for kids aged 10 and older. If you want to relax or practice a little self-care in Grand Marais, this is one of the best places to do it!
Go Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is one of our favorite ways to gear up for a fun winter day! Near Grand Marais, you’ll find many trail options for one of the top winter activities in Minnesota. Snowshoeing is particularly enjoyable in fresh snow or on less-traveled trails (commonly found along the Gunflint Trail).
For a family-friendly trek, consider the Moose Viewing Trail, usually untouched by previous hikers (once you veer off the snowmobile route). Kids will love searching for the old car just off the trail. And, viewing Moose Lake from the platform at the end of the trail. Another excellent spot for strapping on those snowshoes is Kadunce River Wayside, just north of Grand Marais along Hwy 61. Plus, most parts of the Superior Hiking Trail are suitable trails for snowshoeing, too!
The beauty of snowshoeing in Grand Marais this winter also lies in forging your own path through the fluff. Feel free to venture a bit off-trail (unless marked otherwise and as long as it’s safe to do so). If you’re staying at a lodge or home rental on the North Shore, chances are they also offer exciting snowshoeing options (and rentals!).
Take a Thrilling Dog Sledding Trek
Undoubtedly, dog sledding is one of the best things to do in Grand Marais this winter! In fact, I think it is one of the most extraordinary experiences I’ve ever had in Minnesota. Just a 40-minute drive from Grand Marais in Hovland, Points Unknown offers fantastic dog sledding adventures suitable for all ages. Having personally done a trek with Points Unknown, I can attest that it’s a remarkable, women-led organization! The staff, dogs, and the stunning terrain make it an unforgettable experience.
Picture yourself racing through a snow-covered wonderland, snugly wrapped in warm blankets on the sled. Points Unknown offers various tours, focusing on family-friendly dog sled experiences and educating visitors about their dogs and the Hedlund Husky Preservation Project. The knowledgeable team also shares insights about the terrain and local history, making it one of the top winter activities near Grand Marais, especially with kids!
Remember to layer up for warmth and bring ski goggles. Rest assured, helmets are provided for children. Due to high demand, you should make reservations before your visit for this thrilling dog sledding adventure.
Twirl Around the Ice
Embrace the winter chill with one of my daughter’s favorite Grand Marais winter activities—ice skating! It’s an excellent option for all ages, and you’ll find plenty of places for ice skating in Grand Marais with kids.
In fact, Grand Marais offers a true winter gem with open skate hours at the Cook County Community Center, featuring both an outdoor arena and a patch of cleared rough ice. Kids and adults can also snag affordable skate rentals when the warming house is open. Some local resorts also offer ice skating to the public, including Caribou Highlands Lodge at Lutsen Mountains and Bluefin Bay on Lake Superior in Tofte. Finally, Birch Grove Community Center also offers open skate hours in Tofte.
Wild skating is also an option in the area, depending on the season and snowfall, especially up the Gunflint Trail on lakes like Poplar Lake or Gunflint Lake. Inland wild ice typically occurs in November or December, when the temperatures are cold but without active snowfall. Ensure you have a safety plan in place, as wild skating comes with risks. Visit Cook County offers a great winter ice safety plan on their website! We also recommend talking to knowledgeable locals about ice thickness and locations before going out.
Try Curling
Curling is one of my favorite things to do in Grand Marais in the winter! The Cook County Curling Club offers this fantastic indoor activity in Grand Marais – and I think everyone should try it.
Every Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon, the club opens its doors for open curling. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a first-timer, friendly club members are more than happy to welcome you into a game or teach you how to play. In fact, you may just run into my father-in-law! Just make sure to bring along some clean shoes, and you’re good to go. Plan for at least 90 minutes to 2 hours to ensure you can learn to play and start a game.
Personally, I think curling is one of the best winter activities in Minnesota. If you haven’t experienced the thrill of throwing a stone yet, this is a great place to do it.
Play Games + Grab a Bite to Eat at Voyageur Brewing Company
One of my top low-key activities in Grand Marais with kids is playing games and grabbing a bite to eat at Voyageur Brewing Company. Sometimes, they have games available, but we usually bring our own, just in case. It’s an excellent spot for card games or small board games like Cribbage. Located downtown, I think this is one of the best restaurants in Grand Marais! And, it is a must-stop for us whenever we are in town (as you can probably tell from our Instagram stories!).
With a fireplace and plenty of seating, it’s a great spot for dinner and a pint. The menu features many delicious appetizers and small plates, including Reuben eggrolls (a personal favorite!), pizza, charcuterie with smoked fish, soft pretzels with cheese, and more. They also have a yummy kids’ menu. After a full day of exploring some of the best Grand Marais winter activities for families, it’s a great place to end the day or spend a cozy afternoon.

Embrace Hygge
Hygge perfectly captures the essence of a cozy North Shore winter. Here, it’s not just a word; it’s a feeling of quiet happiness and well-being amongst the tall pines and near Lake Superior. Embracing hygge stands out as one of the things to do in Grand Marais this winter, and the beauty is there’s no wrong way to do it. Whether indoors or outdoors, the key is finding activities that bring your family a sense of cozy contentment and joy.
Imagine snuggling up in a warm cabin with your loved ones, surrounded by blankets as new snow falls like a snow globe. Or, spend a peaceful afternoon reading by the fire. Alternatively, engage in a more active afternoon by working on a puzzle or playing cards.
Outdoors, take a quiet moment to watch the ice shards against the Lake Superior shore. Or, search for wildlife prints in the snow. Whatever you choose, the essence lies in finding a way to savor the present moment with your family.
